Happy Father’s Day!
Out of seven grandchildren, I am the only one who continued the heritage of hunting and fishing in my entire family. I don’t know why this was, but I just clung to my grandfather, my uncles, and of course, my own dad.
The second world war, and the depression my grandfather walked through with his family and two brothers all signed up for military service with his brother Merritt never coming home and dying helping to liberate Holland.
In the depression, hunting and fishing was a way of feeding your family. It was a critical daily activity. The grocery store was the Woods-fields and waterways for them.
I have a series of letters that he wrote back to my grandfather and his other brother, talking about the amazing pheasants and waterfowl overseas, his mind, was always on the woods and fields. I daresay as a distraction to the blood and carnage that was going on all around him.
If any of you have read my first book the centre of gravity, that everything comes from is heritage and family and a large part I owe that to my grandfather and father, and later, the woman that I ran into later in my life who utterly dropped me on my rear end came from the same background.
She too came from family of Hunters, conservationists and wildlife law-enforcement -hunting had meant survival in the great depression for both our families -without hunting and fishing our families may not have sustain themselves or as well as they had.
Heritage is everything in this day of parking lots and Concrete fields create your own heritage Happy Father’s Day everyone!
