A perfect evening in the woods.
Earlier today I scouted a new area I’m able to hunt. I found a pinch point where there was heavy deer traffic on the way to an alfalfa field about 1/2 mile away right on the edge of the Niobrara river. The wind was perfect, light and steady out of the East and the deer were traveling from North to South and then crossing the river. I found a couple cedar trees to make an ambush spot in about 15 yards off the trail. I was kept entertained for the first hour by a flock of hen turkeys as they meandered about chasing grasshoppers and pecking at new cool season grasses. Shortly after they reached their roosting tree, twin fawns with no momma came by followed by a doe with twins, then a young buck came by and grunted at the doe ahead of him, stopping to pee over the spot where she had peed. And finally another doe with twin fawns that were straggling quite a bit. They all went by without a clue that I was there. I never let an arrow fly and to do so would have ruined the entire evening.
