One of the primary reasons you need to focus on building lean muscle tissue is that your muscle is your metabolism. 💯
It’s actually more complicated than that, but it’s accurate enough for the sake of remembering WHY you need to build muscle. In fact, studies show that muscle mass is the main factor in basal metabolic rate. This means that if you want your metabolism working FOR you, building lean muscle tissue is non-negotiable.
Your muscle requires more calories than fat to be maintained. This means that the more muscle you have, the better your metabolism will work for you. Also, did you know your metabolism will continue to work long after a good strength training session? That’s right! After you lift heavy, your metabolism will continue doing its job for 24-48 hours after you’ve finished a workout! That’s one reason why I encourage you to push hard on lower body days—because your lower body contains some of the largest muscles, and when you strength train them, your body (metabolism) will continue to burn fat long after it’s over! 🔥
Did You Know? 👇
Some studies suggest that for every pound of muscle, your body is able to burn around six calories per day. This means if you gain 10 lbs. of muscle, you can burn around 60 extra calories per day. That’s 420 extra calories per week and 21,840 calories per year. This means you could lose an extra 6 lbs. of fat per year just by strength training. Not only that, but you will change your body composition, which is a huge part of the overall equation! 🔥
