3 reasons why leaders get in a funk (and what to do about this)
โฒ๏ธI've worked with a lot of leaders in the past 15 years. In this post I'll share 3 reasons why leaders get into a funk and a short guide how to they can remotivate themselves. ๐Ÿ˜” Here are the top 3 reasons leaders get into a funk (based on my work with leaders): 1๏ธโƒฃJob Fatigue 2๏ธโƒฃOverwhelm 3๏ธโƒฃNegative emotion ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซJob fatigue - I've seen this hundreds of times! Discouraged leaders paint a pretty poor picture. Especially when other people depend on their leadership to get motivated to do the job. Why does it happen? They have lost their sense of why. So they are just floating. Carrying on day by day. ๐ŸคฏOverwhelm - Most leaders have a lot of things on their plate. I've talked to leaders that work very long hours just to cope with the demands of the job. Emails, meetings, initiatives, leading people, coaching, organizing. I've worked with a lot of leaders that get over 100 emails per day. As they advance, it doesn't get easier. On the contrary. It gets tougher. ๐Ÿ˜ Negative emotion - I've done a small exercise called The Emotion Table many times. I ask the leader to think about what emotions they felt yesterday. They describe them. (Pro tip: most people can't recognize emotions, so they need a bit of help. What we're looking for is: sadness, anger, happiness, calm, etc.) The last step is: Think about the best day of your life. How did that feel? This is when things start to click. โ‰๏ธAlright, so we know these are reasons why leaders lose motivation. Now what? What do we do about this? ๐Ÿฅ‡Change the mindset from victim to victor. Nothing can be done until the leader will take ownership of their team and business context. ๐Ÿš€Switch from thinking and pondering to executing, experimenting and improving. Lack of inaction is the #1 reason why leaders fail. It's also the #1 reason why leaders get demotivated. There are so many changes in mindset and attitude once leaders get going. It's unbelievable. ๐Ÿ“ŠGet consistent. We overestimate what we do on the short term, but underestimate what we can do on the long term (if we stay consistent).

A Leader's search for meaning
Quote I like: "Man is by nature a political animal, and he who by nature and not by mere accident is without a state, is either a bad man or above humanity." - Aristotle During the past few months I've been searching. This community project and others, have really put my beliefs in question... and I have to say that it has shown me growth like I haven't experienced in the past decade since I've chosen this path. Key things that stand out: 1. It's not only about the mind (how do I frame things), it's also about the heart (what do I want, what makes my heart sing, where does my intuition guide me) 2. Taking extreme ownership works, however, we are all contributors to our shared reality. In order to maximize the impact which I feel I can have, I have to be selective about new arrivals in my life and pick wisely. We may not choose our colleagues, but we can choose who to interact with and how to interact with them. (this is a huge post on it's own) 3. Daily action is what sets apart winners from losers, the motivated from the unmotivated, feeling good vs felling depressed. In the past 6 months, I've had many ups and downs and most of the times when I've felt great were times when I was contributing, creating and moving things. On the other spectrum I've felt down, stressed and unworthy when I was letting myself down (not doing my push-ups, not working on my vision, not reviewing my daily performance, not doing my tasks, etc.) 4. Be compassionate. This is a tough one. I've mentally understood for many years that everyone suffers and is hurt in several ways. But I've never understood it really. It never became part of my DNA, until recently. There's a lot of backstory behind this and some of it is very recent and personal, but, all the things that have happens have shown me that most people are desperate for kindness. They are in need of kind words and appreciation. This is really, not that easy in a world where the dominant culture looks for threats, blame and resentment more often than not. Going on the path, of love, empathy and compassion is much more challenging.

3 hacks on how to deal with interruptions
We live in a hyperconnected, hyperactive world. Here are some recommendations to keep your focus: 1. Use Pomodoro. Default Pomodoro: 25 min focus, 5 min break. I like to do 18 min focus with 2 min breaks. (app hack: Focus To-Do) 2. Don't break your pomodoro by: a. Ignoring the message for 5-10 min until your pomodoro will end. b. Asking the person to wait 5-15 min because you want to finish something (no one usually minds) 3. When you do want to break your flow, write down where you are and what you wanted to do next, so that you don't have to spend 5-20 min remembering where you left off.
