3 reasons why leaders get in a funk (and what to do about this)
⏲️I've worked with a lot of leaders in the past 15 years.
In this post I'll share 3 reasons why leaders get into a funk and a short guide how to they can remotivate themselves. 😔
Here are the top 3 reasons leaders get into a funk (based on my work with leaders):
1️⃣Job Fatigue
2️⃣Overwhelm
3️⃣Negative emotion
😵‍💫Job fatigue - I've seen this hundreds of times! Discouraged leaders paint a pretty poor picture. Especially when other people depend on their leadership to get motivated to do the job. Why does it happen? They have lost their sense of why. So they are just floating. Carrying on day by day.
🤯Overwhelm - Most leaders have a lot of things on their plate. I've talked to leaders that work very long hours just to cope with the demands of the job. Emails, meetings, initiatives, leading people, coaching, organizing. I've worked with a lot of leaders that get over 100 emails per day. As they advance, it doesn't get easier. On the contrary. It gets tougher.
😠Negative emotion - I've done a small exercise called The Emotion Table many times. I ask the leader to think about what emotions they felt yesterday. They describe them. (Pro tip: most people can't recognize emotions, so they need a bit of help. What we're looking for is: sadness, anger, happiness, calm, etc.) The last step is: Think about the best day of your life. How did that feel? This is when things start to click.
⁉️Alright, so we know these are reasons why leaders lose motivation. Now what? What do we do about this?
🥇Change the mindset from victim to victor. Nothing can be done until the leader will take ownership of their team and business context.
🚀Switch from thinking and pondering to executing, experimenting and improving. Lack of inaction is the #1 reason why leaders fail. It's also the #1 reason why leaders get demotivated. There are so many changes in mindset and attitude once leaders get going. It's unbelievable.
📊Get consistent. We overestimate what we do on the short term, but underestimate what we can do on the long term (if we stay consistent).
🔭Measure, accept failure and get back up. This is perhaps the toughest thing to do to get consistent. Be kind to yourself, don't compare yourself to others, just with your former self. Focus on the positive, and take another shot. Athletes do it all the time.
💪Personal example: In August 2023 I was overwhelmed, so I started to do push-ups. I did 24, because I did not want to break a sweat. I set a target for myself to do 1 more push-up every day. I thought it would be cool if I could do 100 push ups.
17 months later I did 456 push ups and gained 5 kg of muscle.
⏱️Small improvement, longer time span.
🚀Remember: Lead every day with passion, purpose and responsibility!
