The Year of Nervous System Healing: What Ifá Wants Women to Know
Let’s talk about something real for a moment.
Many women are walking around spiritually curious, prayerful, and devoted… but their nervous systems are exhausted.
The body is tight. The mind is racing. Sleep is shallow. The heart feels heavy.
And when the nervous system is overwhelmed like that, everything else becomes harder — including your spiritual life.
This year, the Sign of the Year (Otura Nico) for our temple speaks directly to the birth of the nervous system. When Ifá highlights something like that, it is not random. It is instruction. It is guidance about where our attention needs to go if we want to grow.
And the message is clear:
Take care of your nervous system.
Not just your prayers .Not just your rituals.Your nervous system.
Because your nervous system is the doorway through which your spirit experiences life.
Your Nervous System Is the Bridge Between Spirit and Body
Your nervous system is the network in your body that sends signals between your brain and the rest of you.
It controls things like:
• your breathing
• your heartbeat
• how your muscles respond
• how you react to stress
• how safe or unsafe you feel
But here is the deeper spiritual truth that many people overlook.
Your nervous system is also the instrument through which spirit communicates.
When spirits speak, they rarely show up like a loud voice in the room. Most of the time the communication is subtle.
A feeling in your chest.A sudden knowing.A shift in your body.A calm certainty about a decision.
Those messages travel through your nervous system.
If the system is calm and regulated, you can hear those messages clearly.
But if the system is overwhelmed, overstimulated, or stuck in survival mode… the signal becomes distorted.
It’s like trying to hear a whisper during a thunderstorm.
What a Dysregulated Nervous System Looks Like
Many women don’t even realize their nervous system is dysregulated because they’ve been living that way for years.
Here are some common signs:
• Feeling constantly anxious or on edge
• Overthinking everything
• Trouble relaxing or sitting still
• Difficulty sleeping
• Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
• Sudden bursts of anger or overwhelm
• Being easily startled
• Always feeling like you have to “handle everything.”
• Chronic fatigue even after resting
Some women move through life like they are constantly bracing for something bad to happen.
Others shut down and feel emotionally flat.
Both of those are signs that the nervous system has been carrying too much for too long.
And when trauma sits inside the nervous system without being processed, the body keeps reacting as if the danger is still present.
Trauma Lives in the Nervous System
Many people think trauma only exists in the mind.
But trauma actually lives in the body.
The nervous system stores unfinished stress responses.
Moments when you were overwhelmed.Moments when you had to stay strong.Moments when you had no support.
Your body remembers.
That is why certain situations trigger strong emotional reactions that don’t seem to make logical sense.
Your nervous system is responding to old information.
And when the system is constantly in survival mode, spiritual development becomes difficult.
Not because spirit is absent.
But because the body is too busy protecting itself to receive guidance.
Why Ifá Is Calling Our Attention to This
When Ifá speaks about the nervous system being born in the Sign of the Year, it is a reminder that our spiritual growth requires a calm foundation.
You cannot build a clear spiritual channel on top of constant stress.
Think about a drum.
If the drum skin is too tight or too loose, the sound becomes distorted.
Your nervous system works the same way.
When it is balanced, your intuition becomes clearer.Your prayers become deeper.Your discernment becomes sharper.
You can hear your ancestors better.
You can hear yourself better.
Even Leaders Experience Nervous System Overload
Let me be transparent for a moment.
Spiritual leadership does not make you immune to nervous system stress.
If anything, it can increase it.
When you are responsible for guiding others…When people come to you in crisis…When your phone rings with someone else’s problem…
Your nervous system absorbs a lot.
There have been moments in my own life where I could feel my body saying:
“Slow down.”
The shoulders get tight. The mind becomes tired. The spirit needs quiet.
When that happens, I return to the things Ifá teaches us.
Prayer.Silence.Nature.Firm boundaries.
Not because I am weak.
But because maintaining a regulated nervous system is part of spiritual discipline.
How I Regulate My Nervous System
These are a few things I practice regularly.
Prayer
Prayer slows the nervous system down. When you pray sincerely, your breathing changes and your body begins to settle.
Quiet Time
Silence allows the nervous system to reset. Even 10 minutes without noise can help the body return to balance.
Breathing
Slow breathing tells the vagus nerve that the body is safe.
Try this simple practice:
Inhale slowly through your nose for four seconds.Exhale slowly through your mouth for six seconds.
Repeat that several times.
Your nervous system will begin to soften.
Boundaries
One of the most powerful ways to protect your nervous system is learning when to say:
“Not right now.”
Spiritual maturity includes knowing that you cannot carry everyone’s stress.
Nature
The body regulates naturally when you are around trees, water, sunlight, and fresh air.
Our ancestors understood this deeply.
When Your Nervous System Is Calm, Your Spirit Can Lead
A regulated nervous system creates space.
Space for clarity, peace and wisdom. Space for your ancestors to guide you.
You become less reactive.
More grounded.
More aware of what is truly yours to carry… and what is not.
That is where spiritual maturity begins.
The Sign of the Year is inviting us to treat our nervous systems with care.
Not as an afterthought.
But as sacred ground.
Because when your nervous system is calm:
• your intuition becomes clearer
• your emotions become balanced
• your decisions become wiser
• your spiritual communication becomes stronger
Your body becomes a peaceful home for your spirit.
And that is a powerful place to live from.
Let’s Wrap Some Therapy Around This
Take a moment and reflect on this question.
Where in my life is my nervous system asking for more care and protection?
Write down what comes to mind.
Then ask yourself:
What is one boundary, habit, or practice I could start this week that would help my body feel safer and calmer?
Small changes in how you care for your nervous system can create big shifts in your spiritual life.
And that is exactly what Ifá is guiding us toward this year.
