@Becky Brown thank you. I had no idea making little figures would be so relaxing and fun.

@Lynne Rhea love these!! How are you keeping the legs from slumping? Do you give them time to dry upside down?
What kind of clay do you use?
There’s so many clays out there and I used the same one for 10 years before trying something else. What clay are you using? Right now I’m using 3 different Standard Clays: 266 Dark brown, 211 hazelnut, and at school we use 553 buff stoneware. I love the way dark brown looks, but it also gives me the most problems…

I use Standard: 211 hazelnut, 365 Grolleg porcelain, and 240 white. Porcelain can be moody. Sometimes we end up in an argument and don’t speak for a while.
Bat advice
I need to buy some of my own bats to use at my community studio. They have plenty for me to use, but I'd like to have the flexibility of leaving items on the bat to dry occasionally. Since I want to let items sit a while, plastic is probably not ideal?? I'm new to this, so looking for recs on what I should buy. Thank you!

Luminaries (January 2026)
Our first community project is finally here! If you check out the classroom there are two brand new tutorials for making either a hand-built or wheel-thrown version. My hope is that you would run wild with this project and make it completely your own. This thread is for questions, comments, and brainstorming. Feel free to ask questions, answer questions, and post progress pictures. Have fun, be encouraging, and make something you love!

@Trey Foster aww thank you. The walls are a bit thick but hopefully that will save it from warping. It’s anyone’s guess at this point.

@Becky Brown these are SO cute!!
Where do you work with clay?
I have two places I can work with clay- either at work(high school ceramics teacher) or at home in my shed/studio. Right now I greatly prefer the school studio because it’s warmer and not in complete shambles. At home I’ve got one broken wheel, a huge mess from painting and renovating, and a max temp of about 60 degrees. At school, there’s a pug mill, great lighting and, just a lot less hassle. We’re on our third snow day in a row so I’ve got to go out to the old shed and warm things up to get some things done and it had me wondering what your space is like. Give us the good and the bad!

I work mostly in my community studio - I like the people and support. I set up a small area in the garage with a wheel but it’s way too cold right now. if I know I won’t be able to get to the studio for a few days I’ll bring home things to glaze. I’ve also been working on figurines at home. ( to go inside the eggs 🙂)

@Chris Sachs I’m in the same situation with the water. I’m learning from an experienced potter with a garage studio on how to use the bucket system- but I’ve been seriously considering the small sized CINK by diamond core. Still a bucket but it would work for my situation. I could dump the water /clay into the pea gravel behind my garage as long as I don’t wash anything with glaze.

Making pottery is the best part of the day. But the best part of making pottery is the generous and supportive community.
