Bottles are here!
Check out the video in the Classroom section on the basics of making a bottle on the potters wheel. If you have any questions or comments about the process drop them here and we can workshop them together. I can always clarify things or make more videos!

@Kaylea Stoddard there is some math you can do if you know the shrinkage rate of your clay, but I think the easiest thing is to do some trial and error. Luckily most stoppers are tapered so they’re pretty forgiving. The strip of chamois I’m using on the rim is just cut from a car washing towel/chamois.
Welcome to Clay with Trey!
First off, thank you for being here! My hope is to help you grow as an artist, no matter what level you’re at. Introduce yourself here so we can all get to know each other, and so I can start to custom tailor the content just for you! Tell us a little about yourself and the type of art you make (or want to make).

@Kendall Rohrer really glad to have you Kendall! Take a look at what all the classroom has to offer and feel free to ask any questions that come up! If there’s something specific you’d like to see just let me know and I can get to work on it!

@Donna Cormier Hey Donna! Really glad to have you. Check out some of the content in the classroom and let me know if there’s anything I can help you with. Getting back on the wheel is exciting!
What to Expect
Welp here we are. An online pottery class and community is a bit difficult to explain but I'm going to try and explain my dreams for what this looks like and I would love your input. It all breaks down into 3 things: Instruction, Inspiration, and Community. First, I love teaching ceramics. I think I might enjoy teaching more than I enjoy making at times, and I really want to create a space where instruction is natural and actually helpful. My assumption is that if you are here, you are in one of two groups: You work with clay at home and are missing out on some more personal teaching and interactions, or you might be working in a community studio but want to supplement that time with some more instruction and feedback. My hope is to provide that instruction in a way that is scalable for all skill levels. I'll be on here every day answering questions as quickly as I can, and even providing some videos to help you accomplish what you are hoping to. Second, I don't want to bore you or try and convince you to make projects you don't want. My hope is that this space lights a fire in you that drives you to create beautiful things. So I will be showing you all kinds of work that hopefully sparks some creativity for you and gets you making your best stuff. And lastly, I want participants. I could have just posted all of this stuff to Youtube and checked out, but I genuinely want to know you and your art. I want you to become friends with the people that you meet on here and help each other. I want this to be a place that you can go and feel like you have people that support you and care for you. TLDR: I hope you enjoy this space. I hope its informative and helpful, I hope it drives you to create great things, and I hope you feel like you are part of a community. So I want to know- What do you want out of this? What are your hopes? Your goals?

@Lynne Rhea Planning on making some bottle videos today and tomorrow! Do you have some images of bottles that you like?

@Kaylea Stoddard awesome we can handle that! The bottle video will go up tomorrow at the latest!
What would you like to learn?
I have a boatload of content to share with you, but what I really want to know is how I can help you best. What techniques or skills would you like to learn?

@Trish Maguire Oh I love the specificity of that. I can totally work with that! Balance is such an important thing that is honestly kind of hard to talk about because its almost a feeling. We know what looks good and what doesn't but its sometimes hard to say why.

@Trish Maguire Some of it definitely has some history and tradition behind it for sure. A lot of it is rooted in nature...then again a lot of it isn't. The example of a pitcher is a great one. These are some questions I teach my students to ask themselves: Does the handle look like it can support the pitcher? How much visual space is taken up by the handle vs the body of the pot? Is it complimenting the body of the pot or distracting from it? Do they match? I don't think answering these questions nails down the perfect handle for a pitcher but it gets you thinking in the right direction.
