Thoughts from the cigar and whiskey pairing
We had a great time with the cigar and whiskey pairing last night. DaVon and Brett, who runs the cigar lounge where we had the event, paired some great cigars to go with the whiskies I selected. My favorite cigar was the Arturo Fuente Best Seller Maduro. Don't get me wrong, the other two were great. The AF was a standout starting with the Maduro "nipple" on the end, which takes a good flame to get going and gives you a taste of just the Maduro wrapper. It has serious molasses and spices notes to it and the ash holds up strong, which helps cool it down. The other two cigars were good, with the ADVentura coming in 2nd. It's another serious smoke and decently punchy but also had some good notes of spice and wood. The Pairing Experience 1. Oliva Serie G (Cameroon) Virginia Distilling Co. – Stout Cask Smooth • Cedar • Chocolate 2. Arturo Fuente (Maduro) Sazerac Rye Cocoa • Spice • Contrast 3. ADVentura – The Royal Return Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Cocoa • Spice • Evolving finish Overall, it was an awesome time of fellowship with other cigar lovers and a time to experience pairing with great whiskies. @DaVon Walker is the "Cigar Guy" with his expansive knowledge of cigars, manufacturers, and different expressions. I am still learning, after all these years, about cigars and all the nuances. My skill set is more the whisky side, whether it be Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, or American Single Malt.
