A Place in The Sun: Caldas Da Rainha? (Portugal Quiz: 13th September, 2023)
I found myself filming with the crew of UK TV show 'A Place in The Sun' this morning, in Caldas da Rainha - a place of interest for the stars of the show, Suzanne & David, who are home-hunting on Portugal's Silver Coast. Stood in the town's Dom Carlos I park (he who was assassinated in the early 20th Century) amusing ourselves with talk of phallic ceramics and confectionery, I spoke too of the place's name and what I thought it meant. According to wikipedia: "The settlement was founded in the 15th century by Queen Leonor (Rainha Dona Leonor), who established a hospital and a church at the site of some therapeutic hot springs ... the oldest purpose-built institution of its kind in the world, with five centuries of history". I had always thought 'Caldas' meant 'syrup' having seen unruly translations in passing, but what is Caldas Da Rainha thought to REALLY mean?
