Sometimes singles is the hardest game
I just lost in the second game in a single tournament here in Bourg Saint Andéol. I’ve beaten the tough opponents in the first game and was confident going into the second game. I thought I had practised and worked out most of the terrains this morning whilst waiting for the competition and filming a little. However, nothing prepared me for the nightmare terrain that was chosen. I threw the Jack initially to 8 m and threw my first boule which promptly hit a stone and steamed off at a right angle and off the terrain!!!! I had a quiet word with myself and said shit happens through the second boule which hit another bastard stone and went 4 m to the back. It was at this days that I realised it would be much easier to shoot than to point. In the end, I lost quite a close game to a very good player, but whilst I was throwing 1 to 2 boule off the terrain he was only throwing one boule off the terrain. He won quite a few ends with 5/6 meter measures! Shooting was also difficult because of the stones and I don’t think I’ve ever lost to a terrain in my life. Although my opponent got to 13 before I did, I still don’t think he deserved the win. Have you ever lost to a terrain before?

@Luis H. something like that worked for me today - playing on sandy ground which had a crust-surface, but as soon as the surface was broken through play, it turned to dusty sand. Couldn't successfully throw the boules any height. Had to play very low to the ground with back-spin. (Lost first game but won second once I figured out how to play).

This Weekends Match reports
Let's have your match reports on the good, the bad and the ugly. I'll start with all 3! I joined a scratch team for the National with 512 teams at Ruoms. I had played in a doubles with a scratch player the day before and was generally happy with my game. The terrains were the usual tarmac with stones and difficult to shoot and point. I was asked to shoot and whilst I explained that I normally point or middle as my shooting isn't good enough to succeed in a National of this level it was decided that was my spot. In general I played mediocre as a shooter, hitting around 55%. We managed to win the first game in a long battle, then waited 90 minutes for the 2nd game which was another LONG battle and we lost 13/12 which put us into a barrage against the team we played first. I hadn't eaten anything and bought a coke for a quick sugar fix and started to smash carreau for almost every shot and we won in 4 ends. My team mates departed for some reason and I got a message from them saying meet at 3pm on terrain 128. I arrived there at 2.45pm and the opposition were there practising. I then waited, and waited and waited. I sent messages to any team mates who I had just met that day with no response. Then after an hours I received a message saying we had lost by default as I hadn't shown up! The original message had a mistake, it was terrain 118 and a long way from where I was waiting. The lesson here is to check myself for terrains and not rely on others for information. I have also built a temporary terrain on the slip road by the house with some gravel to prepare for future Nationals on a similar nightmare piste.

Club Champions – Triplets
Won the Club Championship Triplets yesterday as a pointer. Lately I've been applying lessons from our Coach @Kevin ORourke videos and The Inner Game of Tennis, a book gifted to me by @Paul Cornwell mindfully. 'Play to Win' and not 'Play Not to Lose' is a message from Kevin that really stayed with me. That mindset helped me stay positive and commit to my descisions throughout the day. A key lesson from The Inner Game of Tennis is to trust my instincts instead of overthinking. When the game got tight, I focused on the boule in hand rather than the score, and on executing the shot rather than worrying about the outcome. Kevin emphasises the importance of playing a mindful game several times and we need to treat every boule as imporant. Every boule deserved my full attention yesterday, usually it was not the case in the past hahah. As a pointer, my focus was simple: place a good boule d’avant, apply pressure, and give the team something to build on. Competition reports
Let’s have your reports on the weekend. Did you WIN OR LEARN? For me, I was filming this weekend at Auch and learnt a LOT about French strategy and how they can be exposed sometimes. During the week I played twice with a local guy who is a bit of a lost case. No one really wants to play with him as he is so erratic it’s crazy. I won both meat competitions with him as it was a deliberate idea to bring out my best game. It forced me to play as close to 100% as I could in the shooting position and whilst we had 1/2 easy ish games the others were epic battles in the dark. Once I had the jack I threw it into the nightmare places that no one goes! Next to the string in case I needed to shoot the jack if he dropped 3 points…..I had to do this multiple times. And whilst it’s only a 3 game competition for meat it’s highly contested and I won lots of respect for my strategic play, accepting my partner and my utter determination NOT to lose. He was happy as he has not won anything for ages and went around telling everyone how great he was 🤣

Pokal (Cup) match yesterday. The third round - hard to believe for us who play in the second lowest league... Apologies in advance for the long post - we are now in the semi-final for our Bundesland, so I'm kind of excited ;-) (1) Tête - I played really well in the first half. In one end, I shot two Carreaus and made three points - I'm impressed if I shoot two boules in a row, never mind carreau... My opponent was also playing very well. We ended up 9:9. I was starting to tense up. I made 10. Next end i had #11 on the ground, and could have finished the game ... I'm a left-hander and the left side was free, but I tensed up and threw the last two boules too short. That hurts. He made it to twelve. Pointed a beautiful thirteenth, beside the sow (as we call it here). I shot once and missed. I tried a lob with the last boule, wanted to land in front of his - it worked - but didnt work, cause his was still nearer. 13:11 for him. (2) Doublette went okay - was very close again. I made the last two winning points which was nice for me (again, being a left-hander meant the path was freer for me). (3) We had to win both Triplettes to win. My Triplette was a battle. We were 4:9 behind, not playing well. They were making some tactical mistakes though (not shooting even though their shooter was quite good, and then not pointing well enough). We made it to 11 (they at 9 or 10). Next we had 12th point on the ground and they pointed fairly poorly. They then tried to shoot the sow - it moved (but not out) - they had one point at almost ten meters. We had five boules left, shot four times (!) but got the beggar in the end. They pointed poorly with their last Boule - our pointer managed to keep his nerve for the thirteenth point.

Hi, I've been playing Boule for years now, but am the opposite of a natural talent. I do enjoy improving my game. Play in the Liga, low down ;-)
