Becoming a better interviewer
I’ve been hosting an interview-based podcast for almost 15 years (650+ episodes). I’ve been thinking more about the craft of interviewing itself — knowing when to go deeper, when to push a little, and when to let a moment breathe. Curious where other podcasters learn this. Courses? Coaches? Trial and error?

@Andrew Hellmich Sure, he pointed out that I missed cues on when to dig deeper into stories he mentioned—moments that could have built stronger interpersonal connection. For example, when he said he left Fox because 'the studio and I wanted to go in different directions,' I asked a general question about the issue but didn't follow up. I assumed he didn't want to share more. I was wrong. As an expert storyteller, he was deliberately leaving the thread open, waiting for me to ask deeper questions. I completely missed that signal. What really stands out is what he told me at the beginning: 'When you asked what was off the table and I said nothing—I meant it. Dig until someone tells you enough or changes the subject. You can always edit.'

@Andrew Hellmich it was. I asked the same question again today with a seasoned guest who had been on television for years. Her advice was to make sure that I'm asking and going down paths that are authentic to the host and the brand/show. Just because you could go down a rabbit hole and dig deeper for some shock or emotional value may come off as unauthentic based on the personality of the host and show. I thought that was unique.

The Wild West of Business
I recently sat down with Mel and he worked on 16 acquisitions and mergers of large corporations and he had a lot to say about how to fix workplace culture. If you like stories, fables, and straight up honesty I would love to hear your feedback on this one.
