Pain after some exercises (post-op 4 months)
I had RIH repaired at Shouldice in January 2025. Around the 3 month mark I started to resume swimming - to get ready for my return to scuba diving. I'm a bit frustrated in the past month that after doing laps and/or flutterboard I have some pains at the surgical site. So then I try to take it easy for a few days till the ache/pain goes away, then swim again and same thing happens. Do I just need to rest longer? Am I negatively affecting the repair by (apparently) stressing it by swimming? I am going on a scuba trip around the 5.5 month mark (July 2025) where I'll be doing multiple dives a day... so I'm a little concerned that I'll be sore after just one dive. I was initially concerned about lifting the scuba tanks and such, but swimming is kind more important. How does one build core strength when doing so results in pain? :(

I had the same issue, while doing the crawl around the exact same timeline as you. I think the kicking and pulling motion aggravated it, thats my take on it for me, this happened after the 4th 30 minute swim that week, I stopped for a week and reduced it to 2- 3 times per week, being very mindful about if I feel pulling there. I still get pains here and there around the surgical site and I also work on the scar tissue 3 times a week for a few minutes, just rubbing and pulling in the area gently.

@Michael Mansell no problem, we all want to get back to normal activities!! Enjoy your time scuba diving, my dad did that many, many years ago with York Suba club but I've never tried it, maybe one day, seems like it would be so peaceful.
Back pain after surgery?
Hello guys I have developed some back pain after my surgery, I started like three days from the surgery and decrease after some days when my core started to feel better how ever in a recent trip, pain in the groin was very small and I walked and stand a lot almost the whole day at second day back pain returns and increases every day until I stopped walked and standing that much Know two days after my trip the back pain is better but I need to alternate positions (walking , seated) to avoid pain, being totally standing could. Increase the pain I’m going to see an specialist for the back pain, my hernia surgeon says is probably a muscular contraction and must go with some local heat but I’m not to sure about it Has anyone experience something similar ?

I would say your using small muscles to support the surgery area, those small muscles fatigue quickly and rest does make them feel better. Your hyper analysis of your recovery makes you very self aware of everything, time does heal even though it may not feel like that now.

@Cris Castro that's great news! I'm much better now, 95% there, just nerve issues to heal.
Hello (and post-op pain?)
Hello to the group. I recently had an inguinal hernia fixed at Shouldice. Today is post-op day 13. As others have probably experienced, the incision site/area is somewhat numb for a while after surgery... my numbness has just started to go away (around post-op day 11). Is it possible that as sensations return, some pain will also re-appear? I've been doing really good recovering - incision looks good and is not painful, but I'm having some other 'internal' pains. I'm guessing this is where the hernia was actually fixed internally(?). I've had a few rather sharp pains while stretching in bed, in an area that is like 2" below the bottom of my incision and right in the crease of my groin... I wouldn't have thought the surgeon would be working that far from the incision, so all I can guess is that it's some kind of residual nerve pain. There is no bruising that far down and there is no swelling - but when the pain stabs me there it throbs for a while. Anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure whether to "wait for it to go away" or to contact Shouldice. I really just want to ask them if this is normal... there is nothing to 'see' at an in-person appointment - like I said, the incision site looks fine. (anyone know if they do phone appointments?)

Keep us posted on your progress, my stretching is getting better in the morning without that tightness, it's there but not feeling the deep pain as much and I'm a few days post recovery ahead of you. I think for myself anyway I have to be patient. I just purchased the hernia surgery recovery program and will start day three tomorrow. I do find these exercises to help make me feel much better after I have completed them.
