Studio set-up/storage
Hi everyone, I’m new here, but I’ve been watching most of you on YouTube for the past year or so. I got a wheel last summer and have throwing in a tiny corner in my basement with a set of shelves to my right and a narrow folding table to my left. It’s kind of a mess 😂. My very safety-conscious husband doesn’t like the idea of me making dust in the low-airflow basement, so I’m moving out to our 12’x16’ shed, which I will share with my new Skutt 1022 kiln and some lawn equipment and 3 bikes. I will effectively have 12’x12’ of floor space, minus the kiln. Any tips for set up from those of you with your own spaces? Anything you wish you would have known or thought of from the start?

@Suza Roswandowicz I love the idea of a fold down table. Luckily, my husband does woodworking, so I’ll have to have him build me something!

I have some kiln cookies ready to go, but I want to make some of the hexagonal ones. They look like they fit much better. I’ll try adding some texture to them and see how that works. @Teresa Tschupp , I’d love to see your hardie board set up. I was planning on adding some insulation and hardie board to the wall behind the kiln, but hadn’t thought beyond that. I’m so excited to get everything up and running!
Kiln questions
Shane and I were chatting over our coffee this morning and talking about kilns. We have a Skutt 1027-3 programmable with touch screen and love it. We can generally fit 60 - 120 pieces inside depending on the size and we always load a variety. We slow fire to cone 6. Since we have the 3 inch brick, after we start a firing, it will not be cool enough to unload for a couple of days. So we were wondering what kilns you all are using, if you love your kiln, what cone you fire to and how long before you open yours? Thankfully you all are pottery people and won’t think we are crazy for discussing this over morning coffee. And maybe what we share will help someone who hasn’t yet decided on which kiln to get.

I just got my Skutt 1022-3 and the electricians just finished up yesterday. I probably won’t get to fire it until next week because we want to get the vent installed first, but I can’t wait! The options for firing programs is a little overwhelming, but I plan to fire to cone 6. I was going to start with the built-in program and go from there.
