The underestimated color schemes
I am a big fan of colors, but when it comes to men's fashion, unlike for women, we have to be judicious or we risk the possibility of trying too hard. Hence, we choose the default option of neutrals - beige, navy, grey, olive, white,, and black. Some of us tinker with earth tones - burgundy, forest green, and yellow (I am a HUGE fan of these three). But, I think taking a more scientific approach, we can look at the color wheel and decide on what would work. This method has historical foundations, and expert designers use them meticulously. Of course, dressing up in colors might back fire, but I think it would be worth it! I am attaching a very basic version of the color wheel. My ideas of dressing based on the color wheel are rational. Go monochromatic but with different hues of the same color for an edgy look. Go dichromatic (two colors) with somewhat matching jacket and trousers for a smart casual look (aka, the suit look, but less formal) along with a neutral colored shirt. Go trichromatic by choosing three colors that form the same "family" like yellow and blue yielding green. Let me know your thoughts.

Too formal for jeans?
I bought a pair of suede derbies from eBay. I wore them out to dinner with chinos tonight, but tomorrow we're going to the wholesale club and I'm wearing dark-wash Levi's because whenever I wear chinos there they get stained. The derbies are less formal than oxfords but more formal than loafers, even though the suede brings down the formality level. I'm just wondering if they're appropriate to wear with jeans? It's been a while since I've worn lace-ups.

@Jeff Wilkinson These would pair very well with dark wash denims (DWDs) as well as chinos. You are right that light-colored chinos are very likely to get stains (I dread that situation too). Just do a trial and see for yourself: pair the best combinations you have and take a photo of each. Check the combinations side by side, and you can easily identify the best one. It is a modern idea to pair such footwear with DWDs and a nice shirt for an elevated casual look. I think for a shirt, choose a button-down Oxford (cream or white) or may be even a vertical striped shirt. You can elevate this dressing style further by pairing with a light or dark-colored jacket, of course depending on the weather.

By the way, I own exactly the same pair of derbies (same color too, Woodland)

How has history influenced the way you dress, if at all? It has definitely influenced the way I have dressed, I used to wear athletic outfits and follow what everyone else would wear.

@Callum Delphin I think rather than history, as we age, we make better choices reflecting our maturity.
A burning question: Should you wear socks with loafers?
Gentlemen, I have this burning question for a while. I own two pairs of suede loafers, but I am confused whether to wear them with socks or not. There are two schools of thought on the either side of choices, and therefore there is no consensus. Here is a poll that would tell us what is the preferred option among the like-minded fashionistas.

Pairing a white T shirt
In what ways would you pair a white T shirt stylishly? This is a color which should flatter all skin tones and matches with all neutral colors and earth tones. I don't think a white and white monochromatic look would look sharp. especially on men. I have seen many ladies pull it off, but of course that is a different genre of dressing.

@Mathew Robinson Agreed! You are spot on. This is precisely what I am doing with my wardrobe nowadays.
