Today's SOTD is a first-time sampling of Dior Homme (2020), and this one surprised me. Reading the notes beforehand—woods, musk, vetiver, patchouli—I expected something considerably darker and heavier. Instead, this is wonderfully smooth and restrained. The woods are certainly there, but they're clean and airy rather than dense, with enough citrus freshness up top to keep everything bright. And perhaps what I like most: it doesn't smash you in the face. There's a quiet sophistication here. It smells masculine and mature without feeling old-fashioned, and has enough presence to be interesting without demanding everyone's attention. This also strikes me as a legitimate four-season fragrance. I could see wearing it casually during warmer weather or dressing it up on a cool evening without it ever feeling particularly out of place. I've still got several wears left in the sample, so I'm not ready to put it on the full-bottle list just yet. But this was a very good first impression. Current status: Keep testing—and definitely interested.

I’ve always felt that perfume does more than just make you smell good; sometimes, a particular scent can make a person truly memorable. I personally prefer clean, natural woody scents. They don't need to be too strong; a faint fragrance when you get close is just fine. I’m curious, though: as true perfume enthusiasts, do you generally gravitate towards woody, citrus, or aquatic notes, or do you prefer richer, more intense scents like leather and tobacco?

Match #77—the penultimate matchup. After more than two months of daily head-to-head testing, we're down to three fragrances. Today's match determines which one earns the right to face Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée in tomorrow's championship final. And it's another painful one: Bleu de Chanel EDP versus Tom Ford Ombré Leather. Bleu de Chanel has proven itself over and over throughout this tournament. I've called it the gold standard for blue fragrances, and I stand by that. Citrus, ginger, and incense over amber, cedar, and sandalwood create something extraordinarily versatile, mature, and sophisticated. It never needs to shout. It just smells classy. Ombré Leather couldn't be more different. It's darker, richer, and far more assertive. But what keeps drawing me back is how beautifully smooth it is. That gorgeous leather note blends with cardamom, jasmine, amber, patchouli, and moss to create something powerful without ever becoming rough or overwhelming. I love both of these fragrances. I'm keeping both of these fragrances. And on a different day, for a different occasion, I could easily prefer the Chanel. But today I'm choosing the Tom Ford. There's something about that combination of darkness and smoothness—and that magnificent leather accord—that makes Ombré Leather one of the most compelling fragrances in my collection. Tom Ford Ombré Leather survives. Bleu de Chanel EDP is eliminated from the tournament. And with that, the last Chanel finally falls. After 77 matchups, we're down to two: Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée vs. Tom Ford Ombré Leather. My favorite spring/summer fragrance against my favorite autumn/winter fragrance. Tomorrow, somehow, I'm supposed to choose just one.

Came home last night after a long week of work travel. My wife and I had some samples we wanted to explore so we made a drink sat at our table grabbed our cotton rounds thanks to @Lon Chaneyfield and went to town! 😜 While this is certainly overboard and the house is filled with such a large mixture of different fragrances the key for me was that my wife and I got to relax and talk about what we liked and didn’t. Knowing that they will rest over time on the cotton rounds and will develop into more conversations!! Sometimes it doesn’t have to be anything more complicated than just sitting with your person and enjoying the moment and we certainly did that!!
