Do dietary fats matter if I hit the rest of my macros?
Yes, of course. Calories in versus calories out. If you are taking in more calories than you're burning, you're going to be gaining weight. If you're taking in fewer calories than you're burning, you're going to be losing weight. So yes, fats matter. How much do they matter? Do we need to avoid them at all costs? I would say no. For both men and women, fats are essential for hormone production, skin health, brain health, and things along those lines. So you do want to include dietary fats. For women, I don't really like to take them under 35 to 40 grams of fat a day. For men, more like 45 to 50 grams. Those are kind of my bottom-line numbers.

@Jeri Sos big fan of Cronometer. I have been using it for years. I remember several years ago the database in MyFitnessPal wasn’t as good but it may have changed now.

What was the MOMENT you went vegan?
I figure this is something we have all told before, but with a lot of new members it would be great to share! I went vegan at 13 years old in the car on the way to middle school. I was already vegetarian since age 10 and my mom wanted to help teach me some new recipes. She bought me a PETA magazine. There was an article saying ā€œVegetarian isn’t enoughā€. I was upset. Because I thought I was doing all I could. Before I was 2 paragraphs deep I realized I had to go vegan for the same reasons I went vegetarian. I couldn’t pay for babies to be taken from their mothers and then killed regardless. That was 20 years ago. I’ll hit my 21st year soon. Best decision ever. What was your moment? And if you haven’t listened already I strongly urge you to check out our podcast here: https://vegansquadcoaching.com/vegansquadpod

There was one event that had great influence on me while I was visiting some family in France in 2013. At the time I was not yet vegan or even vegetarian. I was just becoming aware of the horrible cruelty inherent in our food system. At my aunts house in Bordeaux, they were serving foie gras. I had previous knowledge of how foie gras is produced, so I objected to it, noted it is banned in some states/countries, and said I wasn’t too interested in eating it. The reply from my French family is that all meat and animal products are cruel, and since I was already eating animals, on what grounds was I objecting to foie gras? In that moment I thought to myself - wow they are right. All animal products are cruel. Maybe that means I should stop eating all animals? Sadly, it took me until 2016 to become vegan. But that moment was a major catalyst. The debates about veganism I watched in the intervening years helped me fully make the transition and finally go vegan while I lived in Sweden in 2016.

@Christine Mann I lived in UmeƄ, in the north for a few years. Smaller town without any fully vegan locations but I was able to find vegan options at some restaurants. In the south in cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, or Malmƶ there are far more options. In general I feel Europe has been quite good for vegans lately especially in the bigger cities.
