Slow Progress is progress, right?
I have been working on my front float at my local swim school. The instructors (I swear they’re all 12, I’ve reached the age where everyone under 30 is a kid to me, apparently) have been pretty accepting of the fact that I’m doing my own process and they’re just there to observe. Which is good. The problem is that my amygdala remains firmly convinced that we’re gonna die if we let our hands off the wall. I did get my hands up a few times, enough that the coach slid the laminated sheet with the students’ names and what skills we’re working on under my hands while I had my face in the water. Is it okay that I still can’t fully let go of the wall if I’m making tiny progress every session? I feel like it’s going to take me a month to front float at this pace, but I’m not getting re-traumatized.

@Mary Nichols I started lessons in January, had about 10 hours of lessons so far, I've felt exactly the same as you, I was terrified to let go of the wall, and even when I got pulled round the pool by my hands, the minute anyone let go, i was up instantly. I have made progress, I can front float now independently but still nervous and uncomfortable, feel the urge to move constantly and hate being high on the surface of the water. How long have you been learning? Just keep going and keep at it, no matter how frustrated I get, I just keep going back and keep trying to improve. Good luck 👍
Trouble staying still while floating
I have real trouble staying still while floating, I have a constant urge to move my hands or kick, its like a distraction for me, is there anyway I can learn to not move and just float calmly?

My trouble is I feel uncomfortable being high on the surface of the water, I think the more I stay still, my legs float up higher and it just makes me feel unsettled. I went practicing tonight, I managed to stay still for a couple of seconds but then felt the urge to move again, I guess all I can do is keep repeating this over and over until I feel comfortable. Thank you for both suggestions.
Floation devices
Is there any technique or best way to go from using floation devices, noodles, kickboard etc to not using them? I can kick myself across a pool with a kickboard but apprehensive to not use one.

@Georgina Morrison thank you, I'm not using a kickboard anymore, the time I went to the pool without one is when I managed to front float without one. I can front float, the thing I need to do is hold it longer, when I kick I can sustain the float longer as its like a distraction for me, also feeling so high up in the water makes me feel more uncomfortable, i suppose the higher I am, i think it will be more difficult getting down. I feel uncomfortable to put my arms to the side at the moment as well.

@Georgina Morrison yeah will try for longer, I'm just happy atm that ive managed to not use a kickboard and float and kick, can you backfloat or log roll yet? My next goal is to try and log roll once fully comfortable with a back and front float.
Don't feel comfortable in water or on my front.
I'm currently learning to swim as an adult, never learnt as a child as parents couldn't swim. Myself and my husband both can't swim and we've currently had 5 2:1 lessons (30 mins each). He is progressing better than me as he can front float, glide along with his arms and isn't so fearful. I can't explain why I'm afraid as I've been in deep sea and held onto a float, I think it's the thought of letting go and having nothing to grab onto. So far I've managed to put my face in water and I can float on my back and get back up again. When I try to float on my front I'm ok with a wall etc, as soon as I let go I panic and I'm up within a second. Its getting me down as everything in swimming needs this position and I feel at a stop until I can master this front float and not be so scared. Our instructor is teaching us treading water, breaststroke etc and I'm still not comfortable being on my front. I feel like is there any point having anymore lessons until I can get past this? Has anyone got any advice or been in the same position?

@Georgina Morrison thanks for sharing your journey, how long did it take before you felt comfortable in the water? I've had 6 lessons so far and still struggling. It takes me about an hour to feel comfortable in the water. Just been tonight and although I've managed to do backfloat many times before, I struggled with nerves and it took me a good few attempts before I could do it again. I managed to front float about 3 feet to the wall towards the end of the session, I'm too nervous to float towards open water at the moment. Good luck with your progress 👏 xxx
