Due to popular demand, David and a camera crew will follow me around for a week to learn my creative process? It will be called "Russell-Mania". I'm sorry, but that's the most exciting thing I can think of ... If its somehow BIGGER than that, I will be very impressed! šŸ‘€
Great Call Today! AND... What's Next?
Thank you all who joined today for our Q&A call with David. We loved all the great questions that we got. Your questions are getting more specific as we dive a bit deeper into comedy writing, producing, and directing. We want to make sure we have time on the calls to dive deeper into everything you're working through with your films, so we're going to shift away from doing general Q&A calls. Instead, we'll do more focused Comedy Intensives that focus on specific aspects of writing, directing, producing, etc. For example, we love the "how to pitch" questions brought up by @Johnny Osburn and @Ronald Zapart — this inspired us to do a pitching intensive where we can bring some active producers or studio executives to chime in on what they look for when being pitched, and how they go about pitching their own projects. If you haven't yet joined us on the Premium tier, for the next 3 days, the price for the annual membership is only $500 -- 60% less than monthly!! We're doing this because we know that great comedy is not written overnight, and we want to make sure you have all the support you need. Hopefully, you'll join us. If you were on today's call, what was the highlight for you?

I had to leave a little early this week, but, as usual, the questions were all excellent! Thank you, David and Ellie, for your very thoughtful responses. Always encouraging, and always a big help! šŸ‘ It was very exciting to learn that you recorded your recent writing room session. That was a terrific idea. Looking forward to seeing the process in action!

Scary Movie 6
So the new trailer for scary movie six has come out. And it’s true to form of the Wayans Brothers version of parody comedy. They are going all out, purposely not trying to water down the movie and getting back to true gross out, rated R comedy. Do you guys think this will be funnier and closer to the style of ZAZ than the most recent Naked Gun monstrosity is my big question? @Ellie Shoja @David Zucker @Hugh McPherson @Russell Dean @Joel Trudgeon @Jordan Imiola @Debbie Su

The only difference is that Keenan Ivory Wayans won't be at the helm for this Scary Movie, like he was for the first two. Keenan hasn't directed a film since 2006, so its likely he has retired; however, he will be writing Scary Movie 6, along with his brothers. Michael Tiddes is directing this installment - a guy who has worked with Marlon on some recent spoofs. They have been hit and miss. I think its a safe bet it will respect the ZAZ style more than that other thing you mentioned.

@Anton Holloway For sure. I am very happy that the Wayans' get another chance with the franchise.
The best actor at goofy or stupid humorā“
Some of my favorite movies for goofy, ridiculous humor include Murder by Death, The Pink Panther Returns, Being There, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Top Secret!, The Kentucky Fried Movie, Airplane!, and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!. That got me thinking… who is the best actor ever at this kind of absurd, over-the-top comedy? My personal vote goes to Peter Sellers. His performances as Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther films and as Sidney Wang in Murder by Death are just brilliant. The back-and-forth between Sellers and Truman Capote in Murder by Death about grammar is one of the funniest exchanges ever put on film. But then there’s Leslie Nielsen, who may be the king of deadpan delivery in films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun. Nobody plays absurd dialogue with a straight face better. You also have John Cleese and the rest of the Monty Python crew, whose mix of intellectual nonsense and physical comedy in Monty Python and the Holy Grail created a whole style of humor. Other greats in this style include Mel Brooks, who both acted in and created some of the greatest parody films ever made, Gene Wilder, whose performances in films like Young Frankenstein are legendary, and Steve Martin, who brought a uniquely absurd style to films like The Jerk. From the more modern generation, you could certainly make the case for Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler, who have carried the torch for outrageous comedy for the last 25+ years. And one performance that often gets overlooked is Samuel L. Jackson playing against type in National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1. Seeing a usually intense dramatic actor dive into full parody was part of what made that movie so funny. Neil Simon’s Murder by Death really showed how powerful this style can be, bringing together actors from very different backgrounds and letting them lean into the absurd. So I’m curious what everyone else thinks: Who is the greatest actor ever at this kind of ridiculous, goofy comedy? And who did I miss?

Some great choices there, Hugh! A few favourites of mine: - Jim Carrey (Maybe I am a biased Canadian! For us millennials who grew up in the 90s, Jim's movies were truly 'events'. It was where many of us developed our comedic sensibility). - Gene Wilder (not simply from Mel Brooks, but I thought his segment in "Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex" was the best in the movie). - Rowan Atkinson (it might seem like an obvious pick, but he's one of the greats; and I don't think the 'Johnny English' movies receive enough respect). Personally, I don't believe any of Will Ferrell's feature films ever captured how truly brilliant he is at absurd humour. Don't get me wrong, they have their moments. His SNL stuff, overall, is much better. I am a big 'Frasier' fan, so I also want to nominate David Hyde Pierce. Tremendous at modulating between sophistication and absurdity. The closest he came to full-blown goofy humour on film was "Wet Hot American Summer."

Also, agreed completely on Steve Martin. Most younger viewers only know his commercial, family-friendly later stuff. I remember randomly catching "The Man with Two Brains" on television one afternoon ... unbelievable.

Canadian. Archivist. Hopeful to revive 1990s-style farce, slapstick, and spoof. Looking for writing partners to help me in this effort!
