@Coleen Matthews I love your apron! Seems like you will be on kitchen duty for Christmas. Unless you gift the apron (with the duties as a bonus).

I have completed my apron. This is the first time I did ruffles.

Over the past few weekends I have made a collection of bags for my best friend’s birthday. We have been friends since we were born, and I wanted to give her something special for her 18th birthday. Before this little collection, I made that book sleeve (years ago) and then a simple tote, using Christine’s pattern, earlier this year. Needless to say, I didn’t have a lot of experience when I started this. There were a lot of mistakes made🫣 but it was all worth it. The tote bag is the Simple Tote pattern of Christine’s, but I added a lining to it. I struggled to find a sturdy material that is light yellow (my best friend’s favourite colour) so I opted for a lining to add a bit of structure. I also put a string of daisies (she loves them) around the top of the tote to add a little detail to the plain yellow outside. The little baggies is the Pyramid Pouches pattern of Christine’s. For this, I copied exactly what my mom was doing because she was also busy making these. The yellow material and lining is the same I used for the tote bag. Then I made these little bookmarks from a video that I saw. My friend loves reading (and with finals coming up) so I thought it would be a cute little something extra. I also used the same materials as all the bags. Summary of experience: Mistakes made - many Unpicking seems - 2 times Using incorrect seem allowance when stitching - 1 Bobbins needed replacing - 2 times (📌Note to self: always have extra bobbins when starting large(ish) projects) Urge (denied) to drop everything and start the next day - 2 times Little crashouts along the way - many Fun had - plenty Pride when looking at the finished projects - overwhelming Sorry for the essay🤭 I just wanted to share that even with little experience and many mistakes made, you can still create something beautiful🩷

Well done! It is really beautiful. And such a handy gift.
What was your first sewing project...?
...OR, if you haven't jumped in yet - what do you hope to sew when you learn?

@Linda Campher The pillow cases were my first sew with Christine as well, after many years of not sewing at all. Her step-by-step instructions helps a lot.

I can't even remember what my first sewing project was. It could have been the school project where we made a skirt with a bask, and a top with it, and we had to do some applique on it as well. Not my style - I never wore it. My mom did, for many years. I also made some shorts (from pillowcases) while I were still in school. It was quite the thing back then to use pillowcases - and you could find the nicest pillowcases for cheap.
What should your first sewing project be?
Advice from someone who learned to sew as an adult... And now teaches other adults how to sew FIRST, the most important question is always "What do I WANT to sew?". What is your goal with sewing? There are SO MANY different 'ways' of sewing... Just like some people like to bake and decorate cakes, others enjoy the sourdough adventure and some like cooking dinners. Some of the 'sewing directions' I've heard woman talk about: ✅ I want a hobby that helps me be creative and relax a little ✅ I want to make cute, useful things with pretty fabric ✅ I want to sew for my family - kids clothes are so pricey and ... blah ✅ I want to make my own clothes! ✅ Quilting! I want to learn to quilt! ✅ I'd like to alter my clothes or upcycle them ...And there are more! Some want to do a little bit of everything (Hi, it's me. And most of the women in The Creative Sewing Club 😂💗) The point is : knowing WHAT you want to sew is where you start. Or you're going to end up following all the advice that has nothing to do with your goals. *You don't learn to fry an amazing steak by baking cupcakes* So what SHOULD you sew first then? Most people will tell you to sew things like: 👉 Pillowcases (great practice, easy project!) like this one here in the free course 👉 Tote Bags (also so much fun! I love giving handmade gifts in a handmade bag!) And ONLY THEN move on to clothes. But if that's not your interest - you can definitely sew clothes first! My favourites: 👉 PJ bottoms / pull on shorts (find the FREE pattern + project in HERE) 👉 Elastic Waist Skirt with gathers 👉 Pants with pockets 👉 Shift dress / top These are all JUST AS EASY as a pillowcase or tote bag - but you get to wear them afterwards! When I first started sewing, I didn’t make any of the usual beginner projects. No pillowcases or tote bags. I jumped straight into sewing a baby onesie because that’s what I wanted to make.

@Diane Thomas if you use Christine's pattern and follow the sew-along, you will see how easy it can be. By the time you make the third pair of pants, you won't even need the sew-along video anymore.

@Vasti Wolmarans that sugar water mixture @Christine Craythorne mentioned really works. Try it.
