Oh, I have Anosmia!
I'd been shopping for fragrances and couldn't smell half of them, sadly. I thought that maybe I had a sinus or post nasal drip situation that interfered with my sense of smell. Maybe I had COVID once and didn't know it and it turned of my sense of smell. I asked Sophia, my synthetic intelligence assistant, "Sophia, I can't seem to smell certain fragarances and others come in loud and clear. What's the deal? Do I have some kind of genetic mutation or something?" Her reply was, "Well, actually - yes. I suspect that you suffer from a form of Anosmia where some people can't detect certain fragarances, Specifically the OR genes. Here are a few examples: OR5A1 gene affects the ability to smell B-ionone, a molecule found in violets and some woods. Some experience it as a floral and some can't smell it at all (that's me). The OR7D4 gene: Linked to the detection of the androsterone (a musky, sweaty, or woody note). Depending on the gene variant, people may smell it as urine-like, woody, or not at all. Musk Anosmia in general: Several genes such as the OR5AN1. Sophia suggested that I try different scents and if I could smell them and not others, then that is most likely my situation. I asked for some floral scents and they came on loud and clear. That answers my question. My nose isn't broke; genetics just makes the scent invisible so that it doesn't register with my nervous system. But I still purchased the Oud Satin Mood. parfum at 10,876 Thai Bhat, after discount (USD$342.00 for 70 ml) :-)
Oud, Satin Mood, by Maison Francis Kurkdjian (Paris)
This was an interesting purchase because I can't smell it. Well . . . I didn't buy it for ME; I bought it for everyone else. Right? Asked Sophia, my synthetic intelligence assistant and fragrance advisor about my next fragrance as I was departing Bangkok. I suggested that I wanted a potent and exotic fragrance that spells success and mystique and it had to go well in the Texas heat. She had some good ideas, then I ran across the Maison Francis Kurkdjian line. Based on what I know about you and your preferences in life, this might be something worth checking out. (Fragrances that match our personality). I know what Sophia told me it has, but honestly, I can't smell it. (But it's supposed to be wildly received by the noses at any event). Sophia says that the Satin Oud " . . . is not a harsh oud; it's polished and smoothed out - like oud dressed in velvet. That's part of why I thought you'd like it; It's oud that's approachable but still powerful". Why can't I detect certain fragrances? It must be a genetic thing or I had COVID and didn't know it.
Aumougage Interlude 100 ml
I was on a business trip to India this past June and stopped at the Duty Free area while shopping for a fragrance for my wife. As I began to browse for myself, and keeping myself contrained to a budget after splurging on my wife, I was introduced to Aumougage Interlude (Elixir). It was difficult choice between this and some other brand that I can't recall. This was a HIT back in Thailand. I thought it would be too heavy for the warm climate, but my wife, nieces, aunts, and cousins. My wife's cousins wanted to come stand next to me and take in the olfactory sensations. Sophia, my synthetic intelligence assistant, tells me that the top notes are Bergamot, Oregano, Pimento Berry Oil, Middle notes are Amber, Frankincense (a favorite of mine), Cistus, and Opoponax. I'll go look those up and tell you what they are later. ;-) Base notes are Oud, leather, patchouli, and sandalwood - all old favorites since about the middle part of the last century. I believe I paid about USD$285 for 100 ml.
Out of pocket/back in pocket
It's been a crazy year with work and all, consequently, I hadn't thought much of fragrances until recently when I decided it was time to expand my horizon. While in perfumery on outside of Austin, I picked up an exotic fragrance that I like; I by Ajmal, from the UAE. I enjoy it during the cooler months. I prefer exotic fragrances in a potent elixir formulation. I can't claim to have a sophisticated nose, but I just like what I like. I'll have to start finding the unique fragrance components and learn their signature.
Wikiparfum.com
Hey gentes Not sure who is familiar with this site, but I came across a fragrance encyclopedia website called wikiparfum.com I've been navigating it and there seems to be a decent library of content that discusses olfactive families, bios of perfumers, and a neat tool where you pick your fave notes and it gives you fragrance recommendations
