A noodle. Knocking on Heavens Door.
Inspired by Paul’s progress towards pentatonic noodling here’s a noodle over diatonic chords. I think this is easier than playing over a dominant blues progression because harmonies come easier? They seem to for me at least. Easier to sound melodic. Anyway keeping it fairly simple I hope, using the Em scale….E natural minor I guess…..but resolving to the G notes where needed? It’s a good YouTube backing : Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door- Epic Backing Track in G ( Solo Friendly).

@Iain Brown That solo has some formidable feeling to it. And a great track to work on. I'm thinking a duet might be fun?

Feedback on 12 bar blues, newish licks
I recently picked up three or four new blues licks, and in this short (1:24) composition, I tried to use them all, mostly focusing on one particular lick per verse. It doesn't quite sound like a blues solo to me, it sounds more like an exercise, but I can't seem to get it to sound more interesting, and frankly I've played it so many times that it's too boring to work on anymore. Looking for feedback on any of: 1) technique that stands out as needing help 2) how to improve the composition to make it less boring 3) some alternative approaches for bars 9-12 of each verse 4) anything that strikes you as notable

@Ben Johnsen Thanks Ben, that's exactly what I think I needed. I'm going to have some good fun working through those ideas. I'm quite sure I won't be bored in the next few days! Cheers, Rob

@Paul Bridge Thank Paul. It's funny but I played that about 3 months ago, and listening to it now... I'm not sure I could play it again! It's like I'd have to learn it from my old self. I'm sure you'll be sounding better than that in no time. Cheers, Rob
Anything else?
Would you guys ever be interested in learning any other genres or styles in this group, other than blues? I love the blues, and I love teaching it, but I also enjoy playing other genres. So I'm just curious if you feel the same. I'd love to hear your thoughts. If there's anything I haven't included, feel free to add to the comments. P.S. I find a lot of these bands can't be pigeonholed into one genre, so it's anyone's guess! Try to define Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, or Steely Dan!

I would say "all of the above". To me, what I've learned from you over the last couple years leads me to think of all of these styles as a variation or embellishment of a "meat and potatoes" country or blues foundation. When I think of the riffs in Black Dog, it looks like a blues foundation stylized differently, and the major pentatonic riff that kicks off Ramblin' Man... if that makes any sense at all. Just no bebop please.
New Guitar Day
Yesterday, I got this Suhr Select Classic S Vintage HSS. I am going to sell my Fender Stratocaster to pay for it. Hopefully, it will be a no or low cost swap. I needed a thicker neck with my hand issues and the Suhr is closer to a medium C which feels much better and is almost identical to my Suhr T Style neck. The V63 pickups in the Suhr are really great sounding. I like them a lot more than the Fat 64 pickups in my Fender Strat. I was really surprised how much difference there was in the pickups.

That is one sweet looking guitar. I've never owned a Suhr, but have heard nothing but great reviews from people that have. You'll have to post a demo! Happy NGD!
Looking forward to it...
Hey guys, Really looking forward to catching up later. I've got a fun lesson planned, where we're going to be looking at a great Buddy Guy track with two awesome rhythm parts. So you can jam with a buddy, the original track, or your own loop. See you later at 7pm UK / 2pm EST / 11am PST! 🤘

Sounds awesome but I'm afraid I'll miss it as I'm on the road this week. I think Iain is busy with family. I'll look forward to watching the recording when I get back home. Cheers, Rob

Retired from IT, 68 years old now. I've been playing guitar for more than 50 years - I'm hoping one day to sound like I have been playing that long.
