Want Your Painting Critiqued This Monday? (Plus Composition Help!)
Hey Artists 👋 Quick heads-up: this Monday at 8 AM Sydney time, I'm running a 2-hour painting critique session at the Art School. Here's how it works: Got a painting that's driving you crazy? Submit it, and I'll help you figure out what's working, what's not, and exactly how to fix it. Got photos or an idea for a painting, but not sure how to tackle it? Bring those too! We'll workshop the composition together and develop a solid game plan for painting it. This is one of my favourite sessions to run because you get real-time feedback on YOUR specific challenges - whether it's composition, values, colour mixing, or just figuring out where to start. After this critique session, we're back to our regular weekly live painting classes (with full replays), plus you'll get access to 60+ complete painting courses covering everything from clouds to trees to mastering values. If you've been thinking about joining the Art School, now's a great time. Jump in, submit your work, and let's get you some breakthroughs. https://www.skool.com/samuel-earp-online-art-school/about See you Monday! Sam

If Forests Feel Impossible to Paint, Watch This
Hey Artists Struggling with forest scenes? You're not alone. Layers of foliage, glowing light through leaves, transparent water, rocks, dense detail... forest landscapes can feel completely overwhelming. But here's the thing: once you understand the right approach, even the most complex forest scenes become manageable. Check out this YouTube video where I paint a challenging forest landscape step-by-step, showing you exactly how to tackle all those intimidating elements without getting lost in the details. After 20+ years of painting landscapes and many years teaching thousands of students, I've learned that the secret isn't trying to paint everything you see, it's understanding the fundamentals that make ANY forest scene work. Watch it here 👇 Cheers Sam P.S. Want to go deeper with full-length real-time lessons and structured training? Happy New Year, Painters! 🎨
Happy New Year! 🎉🥳 I'm starting 2026 the right way, out here in Australia, painting plein air at Mount White, overlooking the Hawkesbury River in New South Wales. This is YOUR year. 2026 is the year you finally: - Understand values and create depth in your paintings - Stop guessing and start following a system - Create professional-quality work you're proud to display or sell - Paint with confidence instead of doubt I've got a lot planned for 2026: new painting courses, including acrylic and gouache content, artwork I mainly paint in oils, and plenty of free tips coming your way. Make this the year you commit to your art. Happy painting! Sam P.S. Want structured training to make 2026 your breakthrough year? My first value study
Hello everyone 🙂 I recently joined Sam’s art school and just finished the autumn lesson — I’m really excited about it! This is my first piece using the value-based approach, and I’ll share the full finished work once it’s complete. update: I finally finished this piece! It was definitely a challenging one for my first oil-painting experience, especially the trees. 😅 Looking back, I probably should have started with something easier. I also don’t know why my colours didn’t turn out like Sam’s — I think I still struggle with colour mixing even though I followed the course carefully!

This is the foundation we teach in the Art School: understanding lights and darks before diving into colour. If you want to learn this systematic approach to your painting: https://www.skool.com/samuel-earp-online-art-school/about
OIls VS gouache
Dear Samuel Earp, I was wondering if you might be willing to share your thoughts on working in different mediums. Do you approach painting in oils any differently than you would in gouache, either in terms of technique, planning, or mindset? I’d really appreciate hearing your perspective. Best regards, Howard Lambert

Hi @Howard Lambert , when it comes to painting in gouache, I follow a similar methodology as I would when painting with oils. This includes focusing on composition, tonal values and getting the darks established first, then focusing on colour, light, contrast and atmospheric perspective. If you are interested I have a couple of gouache painting classes at my Art School and I will be making some more gouache painting tutorials in 2026.
