Fungus gnats!!
Oh, guys, I am drowning in lots of fungus gnats! I know something has been mentioned to keep them away, but keep in mind I am located in Norway, and either difficult to come by, or VERY expensive!🫠

Worms arrived!!
I am overly excited about 200 grams of compost and tiny tiny worms (1-2 cm babies)😂 Correct me if I am wrong! I started a pre-compost two days ago and wrote about it in my first post here a few hours ago. It hasn't reached the heat we want yet, but as I said, I think I need to add more food waste and probably move it to a larger bin (which I actually just bought today!). Since my worms arrived today earlier than expected, I grabbed a little bit of that pre-compost to put into their new bin. Is that okay? 😬

Update! Went through the bin today, and the one cocoon spotted when the shipment arrived must have hatched three worms, because I found some small chunky worms (red wigglers) in there today. The rest of the worms are still small and white. So definitely not red wigglers I got, as we have already concluded with! However, the new shipment from a private collection thrives! They love their home!! I have kinda given up on the pre-compost… There are just so many fungus gnats… 🤢

@Cherene Packard ah! Awesome! I will try again with the pre compost, but I love how one can grab a handful from the one already existing bin to inoculate the next! I am trying to leave them for 21 days + giving them some food. Then I will make a new one in which I will only pick out breeder worms to stay in. I need to make some worm chow, and then try to make them happy so they will produce lots of cocoons!😄
Congratulations Kimberly Newton!!! You Won!!!
Congratulations to @Kimberly Newton for guessing the exact number of cocoons!!! Your prize pack will be on the way Monday morning!!! Here's some pics of the prime locations in Big Ben where I've always found crazy amounts of cocoons(over 300 per handful). The folds in the pond liner create the perfect environment for breeding and cocoon deposition I guess, but theres always loads of em here. I raked back the top layer of castings to get to the good stuff. Also I repurposed @Cherene Packard cups and worm chow bag from my order she sent me(knew they'd come in handy). Get a bin ready @Kimberly Newton got all the big worms out but I did see some baby wisps and wouldn't be surprised if theres over 300 cocoons so you could end up with 500-1,000 worms in a couple months. I put some broken up pieces of squash/cantaloupe sprouts in the top of the cups for moisture and food for the babies to eat on their journey. I will pack them in a box with cardboard fluff and shredded cardboard that can be placed directly into your bin, and a couple other goodies for you and your worms. Hope you enjoy and thanks again for playing!!!
Congratulations Kimberly Newton!!! You Won!!!

Oh, I wish !! Probably too expensive to ship to Norway anyways… my guess is at 87!
New colony!!!
Okay, so my new shipment of worms arrived today, and they are definitely Red Wigglers! 🥳 I used some of my precompost (even though it didn’t heat up as much as I had hoped) and mixed it with coco coir to make the bedding. After adding the worms to the bin, I realized I had completely forgotten to moisten the bedding first 🤦‍♀️ So I ended up pouring water into the bin and mixing/fluffing everything together afterward. Now I’m going to leave them alone to settle in and rest until Sunday before offering them any food. 🤪

Counted (tried at least) the worms today, around 200 worms in all sizes, and lots of cocoons! Guess this will be a “grow out bin” until I have enough breeder worms to start a breeder bin. I can already see castings after only a week or so! They love their humid precompost/coco coir mix!🙌🏽😄
