I’ve had a few but I think the transformational one was when I set myself the goal to learn Accident Prone by Jawbreaker all the way through and within a couple weeks could play it from memory. It’s not a 100% match to the recording but it sounds like the song. It was during this time that I found this group.
Fun Friday 😎 (Max Participation Required)
Guitar Players... It's time for some fun this weekend. We're going to play a little game of mystery song, and I want every member of this community involved. Players from PRO, that means you too 😂 this will serve as our weekend challenge this weekend. Here's what we're going to do: Down below your going to find a strumming pattern and associated chords. Grab your guitar and work your way through them. Our goal isn't to be perfect it's to internalize the music and let your chords be the guide. Once you think you have the song, send me a DM, and I'll let you know if you have it right Like I said this is more of an ear training exercise so don't aim for clean and perfect. ***BONUS POINTS**** Record yourself playing one of the sections and post it down in the comments.‌ Here’s our mystery song!!! Strum: D U _U D U _U 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + Chords: Verse | G / / / | B7 / / / | C / / / | A / / / | Chorus | G / / / | E / / / | G / / / | E / / / | |G / / / | A / / / | G / / / | E / / / | Let the fun begin!!!

@Jake Galambos they are a mostly nineties and early 2000s cover band. The songs under consideration are: About A Girl Banditos Seven Nation Army Glycerine Santa Monica Zombie Where Is My Mind Under The Bridge Big Me All The Small Things …Baby One More Time (Bowling For Soup cover) Song 2 Good Flagpole Sitta Say it Ain’t So Buddy Holly When I Come Around Got You (Where I Want You) It’s a 45 minute set so we will cut down the list once we get a chance to play together.

@Jake Galambos this band plays the Ghostbusters theme at most gigs but I think the bass player sings it so it hasn’t come up either time I’ve filled in. It is a lot of fun. I’d like to find a more regular opportunity to perform - need to find other people to play with.

We have been growing so much in this community and I am so excited about it. I've always said that the only real shortcut is playing with others, especially those a little more advanced. With that being said... Drop your current location. Who knows, you might be right next-door to someone who loves guitar as much as you do. Keep strumming, Jake G.

Why Making Music Is the #1 Goal
A lot of guitar players get stuck in an endless loop of theory, scales, and hacks—thinking that if they just learn one more trick, then they'll finally sound good. But years go by, and they still aren’t playing real music. The truth is: Music first. Everything else second. Scales, exercises, and theory are useful, but only if they help you play actual music. If they don’t, they’re just busywork. Here’s the difference between two types of players: 1. The Overthinker – Spends hours on modes, drills, and advanced concepts but never applies them to real songs. 2. The Music Maker – Focuses on playing songs, developing feel, and expressing emotion on the guitar. Guess who improves faster? The one actually making music. So ask yourself: Are you playing songs, or just running through exercises? Are you focused on sounding good, or just checking off another scale? Are you making music, or just memorizing theory? If you want real progress, shift your focus. Play songs. Make music. That’s how you truly grow. What’s one song you’re working on right now? Drop it in the comments!

@Jake Galambos Pretty good. It's one I'm trying to play and sing at the same time. I'll see if I can get a decent recording today.

Most of my mistakes were caused by not being 100% on remembering the lyrics - I had them scrolling on my monitor and got lost a couple of times.
