The Secret to Client Retention
Making an exercise harder is easy. Making a difficult exercise simple enough for the right athlete? Much harder. Breaking an exercise down, finding the right progression, and meeting the athlete where they are takes much more thought than simply adding weight, speed, or complexity. But there's another challenge I've been thinking about: Most of my clients aren't professional athletes. They're hobby athletes. They want to get stronger, faster and better—but they also want to have fun, feel challenged and leave the session feeling like they did something exciting. So where's the balance? How do you make training effective without turning every session into a science experiment? And how do you keep it fun without sacrificing the actual goal? Give me your take. Just to make sure I understand the principle correctly: 8–5 weeks out: → 3× sprint conditioning + 2× strength + 2× LSD → Can I add the 8 × 25-yard sprints directly after my strength sessions, or would you prefer them on separate days? 4–2 weeks out: → 2× lactic endurance/circuit training + 2× strength/power + 2× LSD 2 weeks out: → transition toward explosive power/isometrics and fight-specific conditioning 1 week out: → peaking / reduced volume And all of this is in addition to the actual combat-sport sessions, which remain the sport-specific work? Just want to make sure I understand how you intend the conditioning phases to fit around the combat training.

What’s up folks, Alex from Australia here, blessed to be in this group, Health and PE teacher with 30 years of soccer experience and a few S&C courses under my belt for soccer specifically. Found myself here through Darus wicked as videos when I was trying to organise some S&C sessions for my kids who fight in Muay Thai, sparked something real in me and now I’m hooked on the science behind combat sports. Just wanting to learn and help my kids on their Muay Thai journey, keeps em off the streets so for sure I’m blessed to learn a whole bunch of wicked stuff from yall to help keep them progressing and learning their art. Laboratory assessments
I know all of us do field assessment to just look at performance markers. I’m curious to know what you guys think about laboratory assessments for performance markers and how useful that information may be to you and when you could do that information. For context that would be things like using a metabolic cart for a VO2 max assessment or other metabolic assessments, motion capture cameras for biomechanical assessments, and any kind of force measurement tool for things like total force measure for rate force development. Do any of you do any of that or use data like that that has been handed to you for programming?

My equipment is pretty basic. I use bioimpedance for body composition, and I personally use a Whoop, but for my athletes we don't really have the budget for extensive testing, and for most of them it's still more of a hobby. We do some simple performance testing, though: tracking max strength and seeing if it improves after a couple of months, as well as basic 10m sprint timing. As an engineer, the scientist in me always asks: are we actually using these tools correctly? For example, with bioimpedance, I'd try to measure under the same conditions each time—ideally in the morning, fasted, etc. And with sprint testing, I'd want to keep the conditions as repeatable as possible. I think even a simple measurement can be extremely useful if it's standardized and consistently applied. But the fanciest gadget in the world won't give you useful data if the person using it doesn't understand how to control the variables.
