Welcome everyone!
Critter Battle
I am in a constant battle against critters. Sept/Oct the main enemy troupes are unleashed in me. I live in California at about 4000 feet elevation. This time of year the deer get really hungry. Everything is dried up. They are tired of eating acorns. They get really aggressive. There's one buck who is my nemesis. He snorts at me when he sees me. They are amazingly agile and relentless. He got in and destroyed my first fall planting. He bashed a part of the fence and a doe got in and finished it off. I raised the fence height to 8 feet and fixed the weak points. I think I have them locked out but may need to go another foot. Yesterday I put in lettuce and was dismayed to find it all pulled up and nibbled down this morning. Could not find deer tracks so I think this was a rabbit. Peas were not eaten. Deer tend to get everything. Anyone have theories on which enemy got in? Fortunately we got a good rain yesterday. This will start greening things up and satiate them a bit. But then the gophers will wake up. My wife says I do a good job of providing for the critters but that leaves me hungry

@Dennis Wichter yes but only mid sept Oct. Grass grows quick and lush after first rains. We are getting our second rain today and Im already seeing things green up. So even a week from now they will chill out. Summers are hot and dry and the streams dry up. So they are big and strong from good eats most of the year but by mid September they are starving and aggressive. Which sucks because thats when the bulk of summer crops are coming off. The only answer is very strong 9 foot fences. I just have made the mistake of doubting their abilities until I actually see what they are capable of. Some types of deer are faster than you can believe. I've heard hunters claim the axis deer in Hawaii literally dodge bullets. They are impressive creatures.

@Dennis Wichter it is legal to shoot them if they are attacking crops. No license required. I think most of my neighbors take a few. Gunshots go off here every day. Pretty much everyone has their own range. Literally the only thing stopping me is that I've been working all hours reviving my business and havent had much strength due to 5 years of chronic illness to be able to process. But my standup desk sits at a window and makes a perfect blind. So yes. Thats why I named him Jerky. I have hit him with my airsoft a few times to run him out. But one of these days I'll switch to a rifle. He has gotten huge over the years. He's trophy size. And since I fed him. Well yeah.

This is a great idea. We need to keep all the species going. Hope this grows really big.
