Folks, just a thought. In our society we throw around words that make us look more intelligent than we really are. This is called cognitive bias. A group of people isn't necessarily a "community " it's the intent that people bring to the table that makes or breaks the community spirit. Another word we flog to death is "abundance ". Clearly this word is a relic of a low cost high joule fossil fuel world that wasn't legitimate then and less so now. The other one we throw around carelessly is "sustainability". This one is the probably the most important because by claiming sustainability we like to think we are "gods"and that no external force will impact our sheer brilliance. Remember " the meek shall inherent the earth" or so the story goes. Just saying.

Can you give me an example of what you have in abundance and what practices you employ that are sustainable. Just saying we delude ourselves about how fantastic we are. If the power went out in an hour how long would you last. 36 hours is the general consensus of opinion before society breaks and we mostly but not all return to our animal state. This thin veneer of sophistication evaporates almost immediately. Smarter folks than me have made this their life's work. Check it out for yourself. Knowledge is power.

Sydney backyard veges
Growing a lot of food on a quarter of an acre. Different process but great outcomes.
Brazilian spinach
When moving some potted plants around the other day I found some Brazilian spinach that I forgot I had. Never grown or tasted it before. Just wondering if anyone has grown it before and what it is like. These plants are pretty neglected (sorry plants) but are still alive so must be pretty hardy.

My advice is don't put it in the ground keep it in a bag/pot. I grew a similar spinach and it got into the environment and took 3 seasons to eradicate. It's been 2 seasons since and hasn't re-emerged. Each to their own but their on my "don't grow" list. Plenty of other "greens" to grow that don't escape.

@Charlene R does this have a yellow daisy like flower?
Staking and pruning tomatoes..
What are everyone's thoughts on the best way to stake and prune tomatoes ? I get the feeling that some you tube videos are a bit gimmicky, in regard to single stem vines growing 10 feet tall and needing a small scissor lift to harvest? Maybe double leaders perhaps? Also I've cut some great sturdy 6-8ft bamboo stakes.. Just wondering how close to push them into the plant.. probably just beside the current root ball ??? This is my first real effort trying hard.. my first attempt sprawled all over the ground, had the wettest summer on record then got hammered by Cyclone Gabrielle.. My soil is so dead, not a worm to be found, but I refuse to use chemical fertilisers.. I'm going to top dress with an organic fertiliser and some more decent compost soon..

I'm starting to feel that the best way to grow tomatoes is in a grow tent or tunnel. Sub tropical is a disaster re disease. Deep composted soil and no water on the plant looks like the path to success but so many variables. If you can grow tomatoes successfully you can grow anything
Getting started with soil..
Hi everyone. My soil does needs some work for sure, as I'm continuing on from what the previous tenants left in the beds.. mainly crappy bark potting mix.. I've dug through a few bags of compost, actually I regret turning the soil, as I've germinated all the weed seeds that were dormant. I'd like to get to no dig, but I presume that takes time.. for now I've planted tomato's, basil and sweet potato a few lettuces and there were three chilli plants already there! I've mulched around with pea straw, but I think I need to add some more nutrients to the soil.. maybe top dress around the plants with worm castings ? Gotta stake those tomatoes with bamboo tomorrow, and rejuvenate the worm farm.. poor worms, it's all just castings now.. I should have changed their bedding.. maybe time for them to go into the garden now.. 0 Reply Jump to latest comment 3

Comfrey is a good companion plant. I grow it around the base of my frangipani and have had excellent results. It draws nutrients from deep in the ground and when the under leaves dies off they fertilise the roots of the frangipani. Also use for Comfrey tea fertiliser. I've also found that worm juice distributes eggs and colonies are popping up in all the garden beds
