Writing the Book vs. Building the Website: What Comes First?
Can anyone share their experience? 🙂 Did you write your book before creating your website, or create the website before writing the book? 🤔

I wrote several books first and then started on the website. It is a learning curve and can be done quite cheaply, compared to having someone build it for you. They require regular updates and it's easy to forget how to upload an image or whatever again. For instance its all about website fast loading and so images have to be webP file format. That means you have to learn photoshop or Affinity. By the time you add in all the social media posts and all their nuances, you basically spend as much time if not more on the tech side as the writing a book side. I just launched a new interactive activity pack. That was converting an existing book to a narrated video, plus building puzzles and quizzes to compliment it. I would say that has taken me 5 weeks at 6 hrs a day to accomplish. Do the math on hours spent versus probably near zero income? You have to do it for the challenge and love of it.
What’s your biggest struggle?
I’m curious, what would you say has been your biggest struggle when it comes to children children’s book publishing? And have you overcome it yet? I know all of our strengths and weaknesses are different, so I’m curious to see what your response will be 👀

Realising that success is like winning the lottery. Just do it because you enjoy it and maybe if you're lucky, success will follow. 😃
Amazon's a joke!
I've published 44 children's illustrated books on Amazon, have a website, socials... all to no avail. I mean, everything is against you on Amazon: Self published books are too expensive, profit margin dismal, to get in the top 10 of a niche is a catch 22... About to go with digital narrated downloads on Fourthwall with Genially puzzles and quiz add on. The return is higher, the cost to the consumer a quarter of a book price. A win-win? I hope.

@Layne Fargo Not yet Layne but I'll just release one 'Promo in Disguise' daily on social media and see how I go. There's as much work in doing promos as writing a book! Bit like 'Melania's' new doco? I think the promotion cost more than the production cost? The other thing I had to wake up to, is everyone talks about SEO and keywords blah, blah. All for Google search optimization. But hey, I haven't used Google to search for something in months? It's chatgpt & gemini, they're the new search kids on the block. You now need to rank with them, and they look for different things in a search, "Authority". As an author you need proven authority, in my case, I'd like to show up if someone asks AI for, "Children's book author 5 to 9 year old's." Okay I have a website, books published... but AI needs 3rd party confirmations and references to back that up before they recommend you. To get that you need to be seen everywhere, on social media, blogs, news.... That's like getting from #9999 on Amazon to the top 10. But at least you don't necessarily have to be pouring good money after bad into Bezos's back pocket, so he can build another rocket.

@Sheila Ruiz Well thanks Sheila. Built it myself, which was a labour of love, and hair loss. 🤣
