My Psychiatrist prescribed me to sauna more
Hi All, Kat here from The Neighborhood Sauna Hillary’s. So I went to see my Psych for ADHD treatment this morning and he was very happy I worked at the sauna and have access to session whenever I can. He has requested I make an effort to have sessions as much as possible because of its amazing benefits for mental health and ADHD. So I thought I would share the benefits and why it is good for my fellow neurodivergent friends and anyone that needs some brain love 🫶🏽 (which let’s be honest, all of us could do with some of that) Getting to sauna on a regular basis (15-20mins) not only releases dopamine, that happy buzz to keep our brain motivated, but it also raises Norepinephrine by 86%. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that helps with focus, attention and mood. I’m always harping on about how the sauna “detoxes cortisol” but the controlled heat exposure actually releases endorphins with lowers cortisol and makes up feel good and calm. The new research is showing supporting heat therapy and adhd states doing it 2-4 times a week can help improve cognition, memory and brain relaxation, which are all things that can be a struggle for those diagnosed. And finally, which I’m sure a lot of view that sauna regularly agree with, is that the contrast therapy of hot and cold really helps your sleep cycles and health promoting more of that juicy restorative deep sleep we love so much 🙌🏽 Anyway, I was having a little bit of a read to motivate me to get in that sauna on a more regular basis and this information is definitely encourage this so I thought I would share it here. Hopefully I’ll see you in the sauna 2-4 times a week ❤️ ✌🏽 🔥

Thanks for sharing @Kathie Geraghty I’ll add my two cents as someone who’s been doing sauna (and contrast) consistently for awhile now — and I’m genuinely living proof of the benefits you’re talking about. The impact on mood regulation, focus, stress tolerance and sleep has been massive for me. One thing I’d also add is the role of cold exposure/ice baths alongside sauna. There’s growing research showing cold immersion can significantly increase dopamine and norepinephrine, which is particularly relevant for ADHD and mental health. Subjectively, I find the cold does more for mental clarity and emotional reset, while the sauna is better for calming the nervous system — together they’re a powerful combo. Also worth noting: temperature matters, and it’s not one-size-fits-all. Research is increasingly suggesting that men and women often respond optimally to different temperature ranges and exposure times, likely due to differences in body composition, hormones, and thermoregulation. Even within genders, individual tolerance and benefit varies a lot — listening to your body is key. Big believer that this stuff isn’t just “wellness hype” anymore and it’s becoming pretty solidly evidence backed, especially for nervous system and brain health. Disclaimer: Not a doctor, not prescribing anything — just a regular human who’s spent lots of time freezing and overheating for science (and sanity). This is lived experience, not medical advice.
