MEMBER OF THE WEEK: LISA HANNA
Hi, I’m Lisa A married, ocean loving local, with two teenage daughters. Earlier this year I turned 50, resigned from my role, and took a leap to reconnect with myself. Not long after, I bumped into the sauna community at Hillarys and it’s been a game changer. I’ve been going several times a week, feeling better than ever, and have loved connecting to all the incredibly talented people involved. The conversations have been as healing as the sweating! I’m a communications and engagement specialist with 25+ years’ experience in the not-for-profit and human services sector, supporting people, families and organisations in aged care, disability and mental health. Right now, I’m exploring new opportunities. I recently helped run a respite retreat for NDIS participants in Margaret River, and I’m about to start delivering strengths-based, wellbeing workshops in the corporate world. I am passionate about people and their potential, and have been thinking about a version of Jason's ‘Friends who Create', offering mentorship to people living with disability and/or mental ill health to create micro-business opportunities, helping turn their passions into income and independence. Here’s me leaping off to see where else the wind blows 😍

MEMBER OF THE WEEK: SHANNON FITZGERALD
Hello, I'm Shannon! I've been running for 10 years now, originally inspired by my driving instructor who was in his mid-60s at the time and still smashing sub 4 marathons - proof it's never too late to start. Since then, I've completed five marathons, including two World Majors (London and Berlin) and I'm currently training for my sixth in Perth later this year. The sauna has become a huge part of my routine in the last year, not just for recovery, but as a place to slow down and connect with such a great community. Something I will forever be grateful for.

Wow so cool! I only run if I'm being chased 😂
Why do you use the sauna?
Mine is specifically for mental health benefits. On the days I'm doing sauna and ice bath, I feel so dialed in! Crazy how a tub of cold water can impact you so much 🕺 What are your fave benefits?

That dopamine hit baby! And getting my Vagus nerve (back of the neck) in the ice really is making me feel more together and able to handle anything! Thanks to Ricky for the vagus nerve add on to my practice 🫶🏽
What else is in your wellness routine?
The sauna and ice bath are one tool to help increase your capacity. But I'm interested to know what else you do within your week that helps. You just might inspire someone else in this community to give it a try. Share your tips and tricks for increasing your capacity in the comments!

I love baths, warm, magnesium baths! That is my go to Zen place that I can access any night I choose or every night if I need. There's something about running myself a bath and soaking in it and having a little treat or a cup of tea that just relieves me of any stress, I'm going through. I also love to burn incense, pull an angel card, and if I'm really lucky with the time, I do some journaling and connect with my angels. Also, this past two weeks I've started working out and focusing on drinking lots of water and having my dert every day. Look I still feel like a hot mess most days, but these are the little things I like to try to include into my busy life to make me feel connected and tap into my spiritual side.
My Psychiatrist prescribed me to sauna more
Hi All, Kat here from The Neighborhood Sauna Hillary’s. So I went to see my Psych for ADHD treatment this morning and he was very happy I worked at the sauna and have access to session whenever I can. He has requested I make an effort to have sessions as much as possible because of its amazing benefits for mental health and ADHD. So I thought I would share the benefits and why it is good for my fellow neurodivergent friends and anyone that needs some brain love 🫶🏽 (which let’s be honest, all of us could do with some of that) Getting to sauna on a regular basis (15-20mins) not only releases dopamine, that happy buzz to keep our brain motivated, but it also raises Norepinephrine by 86%. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that helps with focus, attention and mood. I’m always harping on about how the sauna “detoxes cortisol” but the controlled heat exposure actually releases endorphins with lowers cortisol and makes up feel good and calm. The new research is showing supporting heat therapy and adhd states doing it 2-4 times a week can help improve cognition, memory and brain relaxation, which are all things that can be a struggle for those diagnosed. And finally, which I’m sure a lot of view that sauna regularly agree with, is that the contrast therapy of hot and cold really helps your sleep cycles and health promoting more of that juicy restorative deep sleep we love so much 🙌🏽 Anyway, I was having a little bit of a read to motivate me to get in that sauna on a more regular basis and this information is definitely encourage this so I thought I would share it here. Hopefully I’ll see you in the sauna 2-4 times a week ❤️ ✌🏽 🔥

@Patrick Holywell thanks for this Pat. I always love our chats and your advice and this ring is true for me. I’m really excited to see what I feel at the end of February as we’re doing a bit of a staff challenge trying to get into the sauna as much as possible. And bring on the ice bath next week I’ve never been that keen on the ice just because I have high cortisol to begin with, but I’m looking forward to seeing how the contrast works if I am soldering at the same time so that I can balance the two.
