Science and Art
Hello, everyone! I've been a little MIA due to work and health stuff but I am back and ready to do some more art. Today I went to the Science Museum of Virginia to watch a movie about space exploration but I wanted to check out their gallery to see if there was anything new; I was not dissapointed! These are photos of plants, microorganisms and fungi samples, which were taken from soil from a former coal mining area. The colors were removed with chemicals and blue dye were inserted to show how paths were created within root cells of plant matter. There is a full explanation in the photos I took and you can find more of the artist's work on her website. http://www.dawnfelicia.com/ If you have a chance to go to the science museum in Richmond, Va, I highly recommend checking it out.

I'm glad you all like it! Also if you haven't been to the museum in a while, check out The Forge. It's a cool area where you can work on many projects like woodworking, sewing, digital art, 3D printing, and programming projects. They usually do cool art-based activities during events that often combine science with art. I highly recommend checking it out, especially if you have little ones.

@Christopher Foster It depends! If you are a member, it's included in your membership. Sometimes they have 21+ events or themed fridays (like Star Wars Day on May 4th) and tickets can range from $18-25. https://smv.org/explore/things-to-do/march-10-dollar-days/ They also have $10 days that get acess to the makerspace for fun activities. I would check their calendar to see what events are coming up. 😁

Ive started my Marrakech drawing and this is the first time Im using other pastels as the first layer and then using my Sennelier for the second layer. So far it's been a great experiment and I am taking my time to really apply the layers and getting the right tone. I also JUST started like 5 minutes ago so it's definitely a WIP 😆
Struggling with perspective?? Use a Grid Maker!
First, my apologies if you are unable to see the drawing well as I'm using a H9 pencil 😅 I need to make it light to avoid the pencil markings from bleeding through the oil pastel. I've always had problems with perception (but then again, who doesn't?) and I can't tell you how many times I've had to erase and redo my line work. Now that I am getting into cityscapes, knowing how to get the right size and angles is crucial to get an accurate street view. Again, I used the grid method to pre render my drawing and I had a "AH HA!' moment when working on the buildings. For once, I finally saw the city as just shapes. Rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, etc. Everything is a shape of some kind. Once that clicked, I began to draw just shapes and everything just came together. I wasn't trying to draw a curb; I was drawing a rhombus. Everything just made sense and I was able to trust the process. I could still feel my brain try to fill in what it thought was there but I just focused on one square at a time and created the angles I saw. This is an exciting victory for me. This is why learning the basics is so important. If you've always had trouble with perspective, definitely give the grid maker a try.

Im working on my next drawing which is going to get me out of my comfort zone and play with yellows and browns. I've also been wanting to practice city landscapes in general so this will serve both purposes. 😁
Learning from Impressionism
Impressionism is one of my favorite art movements, especially when it comes to cityscapes. I just enjoy how small , seemingly abstract marks can turn into a painting when you sit back and look at it as a whole. When I was getting frustrated about my detail, I went to the art museum nearby and really looked at how impressionist artists added their detail. I was surprised by how much of it was my brain filling in details to create something that may not have been there. Just a small black dot represented a hat on someones head on a street. So for these drawings, I really wanted to focus on letting the whole piece speak for itself. I didn't worry too much about detail; I let my marks speak for themselves. This was also the first time I truly began to understand under tones and how to get the coloes I wanted. Im still working on saturating colors in the sky area but Im done with the second drawing. Im pretty proud of them!

@Christopher Foster Thank you!! That's what I'm learning right now with my oil pastels. Sennelier layers well like actual oil so I'm learning how to layer more. I've also looked up how some artists will put down a color layer of cheaper oil pastels (cheaper than Sennelier 😄) and then layer the more expensive pastels on top to make everything pop.
