Wanna be part of a TTRPG Podcast?
Hi all. Was wondering if there are any creators out there that would be at all interested in helping to contribute to/participate in/or be a guest on (particularly if you have. project coming out etc) a podcast project I (and several others) have been working on over the past year. We interview guests and generally just talk about TTRPG related content in a silly and open ended way though not without getting into the proverbial weeds as it were. Anywho, anyone who might have a project coming up or has any interested said me DM or reply here.

Hi I write a substack - Circle of One Dispatch and have done some small publications on DTRPG and want to develop more publications
A delicate conversation
Hi ladies, gentleman and everything in between. I have been interested in sharing some ideals but feel like they don't belong. I do not have a game right now and I call myself a GM, but I’ve only run two games. I’m just going to say it. I love crunchy games and feel they can bring great imagination to a character story. I don’t dislike rule lawyers as long as they do it not to gain the system, no human railguns please. Right now I don’t have the funds to buy The Game Master’s Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying but I’m looking to get it, but I do use other systems that sound close to it again I don’t have the book so i'm just going off of what I've been told and glimpse. I suppose what I am saying is the space seems to be repulsed by crunch, but that is part of my style and while it is just maybe me in my head the feeling is my ideals shouldn’t be said out loud. So I ask for wisdom from all young GM’s to the distinguished GM’s. Should I just change or does my style have a seat at the table?

oh no I'm all about crunch as long as it means something and it makes your game better
Building encounters for D&D is not fun (for me)
This post is certainly not intended to make people angry or start some sort of online war. I will go out of my way to say that I'm not a "strict" DM by any means and I have in the past found D&D a bit restrictive both as a player and a DM so I tend to run games loosely. Right now I'm running a game for 4 players using 2024 rules and they are currently all level 4. The players are just about to open a tomb which has a warning on it about it containing a "warrior" which is basically me hinting that there is an encounter in the tomb. I want the encounter to be challenging because the tomb holds a vital piece of information to the story The last encounter I built for them was according to the builder "deadly" but they cleared it with ease. I find the whole challenge rating thing incredibly confusing, even more so because we are not using XP. Any encounter builder that I have used has said "this might TPK the party" and it just does not have that effect. I'm not trying to TPK the party, but I do want them to feel challenged and feel potential danger. It's incredibly frustrating and something I really dislike about D&D. Rant over.... Advice welcome

I love building encounters - trying to make them dynamic and interesting with objectives to achieve beyond kill the monster and steal their stuff. I like to use the environment - one of the best encounters of my recent campaign was a fight against an ant lion on its home turf -- a sandy pit Here's the whole encounter s I ran it (with a party of 4 2nd level characters) - it was a close thing as a halfling druid - Posco - slid into the pit and was for a couple of rounds grasped by the ant lion's mandibles (this was run using level up advanced 5e by EN Publishing). As the party crests another dune, they feel the ground begin to shift beneath them. The fine sand starts sliding toward a wide pit, and before they can react, they see the monstrous Ant Lion rise from its sandy lair, mandibles snapping. The sand gives way beneath their feet, and they are pulled toward the creature's waiting jaws. The desert is not just a vast wasteland—it’s alive, and it’s hungry. Encounter: The Ant Lion Context: During the party’s journey through the shifting sands, they unknowingly enter the hunting grounds of a massive Ant Lion, a predatory insect that hides beneath the sand and waits for prey to fall into its trap. This encounter can occur during one of the skill challenge rounds (such as avoiding the shifting sands) or as a standalone combat encounter while the party is traversing the desert. Triggering the Encounter: As the party moves across the dunes, they notice a subtle shift in the ground beneath them. The sand becomes finer, and small pebbles begin to roll toward a shallow depression. Before they realize what’s happening, the sand collapses, forming a deep pit—a trap set by the Ant Lion lying in wait beneath the surface. Perception (DC 14) or Survival (DC 14): A successful check allows one or more party members to recognize the danger before the trap is fully sprung, giving them a chance to react quickly. Failure: If the party fails the check, one or more characters are caught in the pit, sliding down the sandy walls toward the Ant Lion at the bottom. They must act quickly to avoid becoming its next meal.

Coffee Hours starting this Friday!
I tend to do some of my game prep on Friday mornings, so I'll be hosting an informal coffee hour on Fridays at 11am ET. It's a little late for coffee, sure, but I'm hoping this helps some of our non-US members join us (and it won't be too early for members on the West Coast). Go to the Calendar page to see the event in your own time zone. Come hang out, drink your beverage of choice, and talk about your ongoing and planned games. See you there!
