How I bought a $100,000 domain for $40 bucks
I just bought LeadsZen.io a few minutes ago, but here's the full story. Earlier today I was searching the shit out of catchy names with matching domains for my lead-gen agency. I came across the domain ZenLeads.io and then found out that the previous owner had let it expire 28 days ago and it was getting ready to go back on the market. Domain registrars give a 30 day grace period before the domain goes into an unretrievable redemption period where they then either let it go back on the market OR put it up for auction. Well, I spent a few hours on chat today with Namecheap, (where ZenLeads.io was registered) trying to figure out how get the domain before it went to auction or back on the market. Namecheap was seriously vague with me and kept giving me ambiguous answers. I finally decided to just catch it on the market when it became available again. Then about an hour after my chat with Namecheap I see the domain listed for sell on GoDaddy for $100,000! Pissed me right off. I knew Namecheap put it for sell right after our convo and it was me who brought it to their attention. I dug deep today and realized these domain registrars work together to auction off valuable domains that go expired. Namecheap sent it to Godaddy right after our chat and priced it at $100,000, even though Namecheap has their own auction. So I kept playing with words and I found the exact opposite position of the words was available on the open market place. LeadsZen.io Which I think honestly has a better ring to it. It sounds like Lead-Gen, but it's Lead-Zen. My market is mainly health and wellness so it fits nicely. Thought I would share. I will never do business with Namecheap again.
