⏰ Class 1 Now Posted! (Write Discussion Notes Below)
Write your discussion notes below from "Foundations – Basic Principles of Art Through Arthur Jafa." If you are having trouble opening it, view the screenshot below with instructions. SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS: 1. How does rhythm appear in both the tool installation and photo arrangements? 2. Where do you see the strongest contrasts in the exhibition? 3. How does Jafa use proportion to create emphasis? 4. What movements guide viewers through the space? 5. How do recurring symbols create visual connections? 6. Where do you see hierarchy in the exhibition layout? This approach makes contemporary art principles more accessible while using Jafa's work as a concrete example of their application.

@Jess Elliott I really liked your last note! How Black life is only preserved when it serves a purpose for others. Visibility can be both a privilege and a risk, depending on who’s in control. Black people are always being watched whether it’s for entertainment, consumption, surveillance, or control. There’s this constant tension between hyper-visibility and erasure being celebrated when useful, policed when seen as a threat, and ignored when in need of protection. It’s like being seen doesn’t always mean being safe; sometimes, it just means being more exposed to whatever the world decides to project onto you.

@Dennis Stagg I love the way you put that, how the work both demands and fixes our focus. It really makes me think about how history is always layered, but the way we engage with it is often selective. What we choose to acknowledge says just as much about us as it does about the past itself.
