My breakfast consists of boil egg and bacon and lunch was a veggie salad with balsamic vinaigrette.
Sugar is the Problem, Fat is the Answer
For years, we were told to fear fat and embrace “low-fat” everything. But the real culprit behind inflammation, weight gain, and constant cravings isn’t fat—it’s sugar and refined carbs. Sugar spikes your blood glucose, triggers insulin, and inflammation. This constant internal “fire” is linked to nerve damage, diabetes, weight gain, brain fog, and fatigue. Healthy fats, on the other hand, are stabilizers. They: ✅ Steady blood sugar and insulin levels ✅ Keep you fuller longer, reducing cravings ✅ Calm inflammation at the root ✅ Support brain and nerve health ✨ Practical Step: Add a source of healthy fat to each meal—like avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, or grass-fed butter—and reduce sugary, refined carbs. This simple swap can completely change how your body feels and functions. This is why the YES “DO” LIST appears so restrictive. 🔥 When you stop feeding the fire with sugar and start fueling with real fat, your energy stabilizes, your cravings quiet down, and your body can finally heal. Where are you getting your fat from? 🫶🏾 Shun

I utilized the above for healthy fats but I also try to include fatty fish like herring, halibut and eggs.

I’m in, I’m giving bananas.
Have you ever noticed how rarely movies show the real health struggles that so many of our families face?
When I think about Soul Food, I can’t help but remember Big Mama. She wasn’t just the heart of the family, she was also diabetic, suffered a stroke, and eventually passed away. That moment when she burned her arm while cooking felt so real, because many of us have witnessed our loved ones quietly battling health issues while still trying to hold everything together. I’ve always appreciated Tracy Edmonds for having the courage to bring those realities to the screen. It wasn’t just a story—it was a mirror. So I want to ask you: 👉🏾 Can you recall a time when a movie you watched made you stop and really think about health in our communities? 👉🏾 How did it hit you? Stories like these stay with us because they touch truth. I’d love to hear what scenes or films have stuck with you.

Yes! Soul Food definitely made me stop and think about health in our communities. It’s one of my favorite movies as well. While it’s a beautiful story about family, love, and tradition, it also shows how some of the same traditions can impact our health. The family gathered every Sunday for big, soulful meals, but those meals were full of fried and heavy foods, and eventually we see how “Big Mama’s” health suffered because of complications from diabetes. That really hit home for me because it’s how we gather today at my mom’s house. Also, I think about how many of us grow up celebrating with food that isn’t always the best for us, and how we often pass those habits down without questioning them. It made me reflect on the importance of keeping our traditions but also finding healthier ways to cook and share meals, so we can keep those family gatherings going for generations without sacrificing our health.

I still cry when I watch the movie. I’ve also noticed how the silence resonates within my family.
Kicker or Cutter - I call this honesty
I’ve evaluated my new normal routine and I’ve noticed that I am a cutter. I know that long-lasting change works better for me when I take it one step at a time. Instead of going cold turkey, I’m intentionally cutting my sugar down to 30–50g a day. This lets me stay consistent, avoid the extreme cravings and ‘rebound’ moments, and build a habit I can stick with for the long run. For me, slower and steadier progress means I can actually enjoy the process while still moving toward my health goals.”
