Let’s Be Real: What’s Holding You Back From Starting?
Hey fam 👋🏾 Hope you’re doing well. I want to get to know where everyone is at in their Homebase journey right now, because I know many of you aren’t hosting yet, and that’s totally okay. Starting is the hardest part, and most people don’t get stuck because they’re lazy… they get stuck because something feels unclear, risky, or overwhelming. So I’m curious (and please be honest) Where are you right now? still dreaming, researching, choosing a country/city, looking at properties, or ready to launch? and what’s the ONE thing that’s holding you back from taking the next step? No judgment at all🙏🏾 I’m asking so we can support each other better and share the right resources, encouragement, and real-world steps.

Hi Weyni and Marvin!I’m really glad to be connecting with you. I’ve been following your work and the way you guide people into the Airbnb space, and I appreciate the practical insight you share. After my recent trip to moshi n Zanzibar , I began reaching out to hosts there and reviewing available apartments and houses for long-term rent. Since my plan is to rent long-term and operate it as an Airbnb, I’m trying to understand whether apartments perform well in that market or if standalone houses are generally a stronger option. I’ve also been told that many rentals are unfurnished, which makes it challenging for me to calculate a realistic startup budget. At this stage, I’m simply trying to evaluate the right property type and understand what a practical initial investment might look like. I would really value your perspective. Thank you for your time.

@Weyni Tesfai Hi Weyni, thank you so much. That really put things into perspective for me. Hearing that it cost around 10k USD just for furnishing is honestly a bit crazy, but also helpful to understand the reality.Right now I’m planning to start with around 12k USD to begin this business, so I’m trying to think carefully about where that money would stretch the most. I was in Kenya last year and I loved it as well, but for some reason my heart keeps going back to Tanzania. But I know it’s not about me, it’s about where this business can actually do well. So my question for you would be If you were starting again today with around 20k USD, would you still choose Tanzania/Zanzibar or would you go with Kenya? Or do you think with that budget it’s better to wait, save more, and start later? I’m still feeling a bit uncertain because nothing is really on my plate yet and it doesn’t feel good to feel this way. Your experience really helps. Thank you again.
