How do you run interrogations?
Does anyone have a favorite approach to running interrogations? I don't think I have ever run one or played in one that felt like it went well. The players ask a bunch of vague questions expecting lore dumps from a minion. I need something less detailed than a long uncomfortable RP back and forth and more than "you interrogate him for 20 minutes and discover that he really dosn't know much."

I primarily run Daggerheart, so I get to use the mechanics of allowing players make rolls to apply Stress to an adversary that they are interrogating. But I am thinking about stealing the concept of Motivations and Pitfalls from Draw Steel's Negotiation system to add a little variety to those encounters. For example, a PC decides to go the intimidation route and wants to make a Presence roll to threaten the adversary with violence. If that adversary is a low-level henchman whose Motivations include avoiding pain at all costs, maybe the PC gets advantage on the roll. But if the adversary is a loyal lieutenant trained to withstand torture, now the PC gets disadvantage on the roll.
Diary - the proactive concept has made me more interested in learning other systems
I realized this morning that I have become much more interested in what other systems offer since I started thinking about collaborative campaign design etc. I have always been drawn to heroic fantasy, which is well handled by the two systems I know best. Letting players pick a genre instead of me pitching one has got me thinking about how I might run scifi, sci-fantasy, horror, steampunk, ... So, giving players more ownership of the game has changed my interest in other systems and I find myself reading up on other systems and what they do best. I wonder if others have gone through a similar realization that they can do more and move out of their comfort zone.

@Jay George I *love* Mothership! I only recently learned about the existence of Orbital Blues. Have you already played that one, and if so how did you like it?

@Jay George I might argue Mothership is *best* for one-shots. If your characters survive longer than that they're doing better than most of mine have 🤣 If you want to run a longer campaign, there are rules to tone down the difficulty so characters last longer, but typically out of the gate the adventures are pretty deadly
Gaming system question
I know Dnd 5.5e is not popular with a lot of folks, just wondering why. Also curious what systems are your favorites and why? I'm in my first year of ttrpg-ing and don't feel I can take on learning a new system yet but I'm just wondering in this group what factors influence your likes and dislikes about various systems. I have played some independent systems at conventions and enjoyed them, and I do like the combat mechanics of Pathfinder, but Dnd is really big where I live and I already have a lot of the physical materials so I'm pretty invested in it for awhile. Open to any thoughts though, thanks!

@Jordan Peacock I saw on your bio that you're running Good Society! Do you have any tips for running that one? My wife has no experience with TTRPGs, but she's a rabid Jane Austen fan. I think I've got her interested in trying this out, and I really want to knock it out of the park on the first session so she'll want to keep playing.

I still like to play D&D, but I've found that I just enjoy several other games even more. I'm fortunate that my local game store has several players and GMs that play a variety of games, so I've been able to experience several new favorites: 1. Daggerheart: This is my go-to game and the one I primarily run for people. The biggest things I enjoy about it are the Hope & Fear mechanics and Environments. 90% of my prep for a game is probably creating Environments and then seeing which ones my players move in to. It really fit the way my GMing brain works. 2. Mothership: This was the first non-D&D TTRPG that I tried, and I fell in love with it. The rules are simple and brilliant, and I've never had more fun watching my own characters meet creatively gruesome ends. 3. Dolmenwood: I haven't actually played or run this one, yet, but I'm planning to run it later this year. It's such a cool setting, and I've been stealing monsters from it to convert into Daggerheart adversaries for an upcoming campaign
Game Prep Notes
I would love to see examples of how you prepare notes to be useful for you while running the game. How can notes support proactive gameplay? As an example, here are notes I have thinking Twilight (a cleric) might go back to the clinic where she used to work, some reminders of goals, npcs, ...

Welcome to the Game Master's Laboratory!
Welcome to the Game Master Laboratory! This is a place for people who are running (or planning) TTRPG games to brainstorm ideas with other GMs, share ideas and resources, and test their creations with each other. I recorded a short video to get you started, which you can view in this post. It's all about what we do here, but it's also about how to use Skool, so if you're new to Skool, make sure to check that out! If we haven't met you yet, we would like to. Please make a post in the "General Discussion" channel to introduce yourself and tell us... 1. Which systems you like to play/run 2. A bit about the games you're running right now Glad you're here. DM us if you have any questions.

Hello! I'm Mike, and I have a few years of experience running D&D 5E and Daggerheart one-shots. I'm preparing to run my very first mini-campaign in Daggerheart using the Witherwild frame, and I've been reading *The Game Master's Handbook of Collaborative Campaign Design* because I want to encourage my players to have a hand in creating the game they'll be playing! One day I also hope to find time to run some games in Mothership, Fatherfog, Dolmenwood/OSE, and DCC
