Glaze Roulette
Hi everyone, I'm late to the game, but I just unloaded a bisque fire and I'd like to play :) My top shelf is 12 across and 5 deep and the next shelf is 7 across and 5 deep. Jungle gems are 4 across, 2 deep.
@Ona Papageorgiou Tea Dust - this should be interesting :)
@Renée Glasgow me too! I've only used it once - it was pretty by itself, not sure how it's going to do in combo!
Grog or No Grog
Do most people use clay with or without grog for mugs/cups? Also trinket dishes?
Mostly no grog, but if I'm planning to use it for bakeware I use clay with grog.
Another kiln question
How big is your kiln and how long does your it take for a bisque fire (06-04) and a cone 6 glaze fire? I imagine it depends a lot on size and insulation, but I’m looking for an average. I feel like my first firing took forever, but I don’t know if that’s normal or if I need to look into other firing programs.
Hi Tara, I have a Skutt 1027 with 3" brick - I just started a bisque fire and my controller said a little over 14 hours. I know that seems long, but I use a lot of speckled clays so I always slow fire. This is a straight up 04 bisque, no preheat and no hold. Add another hour for a glaze fire, a little longer if I'm doing a hold. By the time the kiln is cool enough to open it's been 2 days - talk about torture!!
Kilns with 3 inch walls
Do you think 3 inch walls on kilns save enough electricity to make them worth the extra $$
I went with the 3" bricks for the efficiency - just be aware that it does take longer to cool down....I usually wait until temp is under 100F and it seems like that last hundred degrees or so takes forever!!
@Ona Papageorgiou Ona, have you ever watched Lisa Riland's channel? She likes to get into the science of pottery - I really enjoy her videos and I feel like you might also!
Kiln advice
I’m hoping to get my first kiln later this year and trying to figure out what size to go for. I’m looking at a 60 litre 15amp as the electrics are more straightforward but wondering if in the long run I’d be better getting the electrics sorted for a bigger option? It will be in a shed at the side of my house. I’d love to hear about people’s experiences and if your first kiln has been your only one? 😁
I was going to get the small kiln that plugs into existing outlets, but my husband talked me into going for the larger one. I had to have an electrician come and add the new wiring and outlet for it, but now I'm so glad I did. It really depends on the type of work you do, and the volume of work you do.
New electric box and my kiln shed next to the house...

Hi all, after dreaming about pottery since I was a little girl, I FINALLY made my first handbuilt mug at age 59 and that was all it took to be hooked!
