New: a 6-week Solo System for real people
I’ve been building something new, behind the scenes for the last 2 and a half years. It’s for two types of guitar players: 1️⃣ You’ve been improvising and soloing for a little while… but it still feel like guessing or noodling or just sort of playing scales. 2️⃣ You’re newer to guitar… finally playing songs… maybe you’ve never learned a scale, but… and you’re ready to finally start playing playing solos and improvising lines. Either way, you want the same thing: That moment where you realize: “Wait… I can actually do this.” Tomorrow I’ll share the full breakdown for my new “Target Note Solo System” and how you can get in early for less and with more support 😊 I'm only going to be able to open so many spots, so if you want me to send it to you first, comment/reply “SOLO”.

What's for breakfast??
What do you usually have or breakfast?? I know it's a weird question...but a friend the other day shared with me his dream of opening an American breakfast place in Scotland, so I was thinking about it. And it got me thinking...what are we all eating in the mornings? I usually just have coffee, unless my wife baked cookies or something and then I eat one of those because they are there when I pass them 🙃🫣 I know @Tim Hess has scrapple and had to teach us all what that is 🙃

I have a protein smoothie with almond milk and some type of frozen fruit like strawberry or bananas. Other times I make a breakfast sandwich kinda like an egg McMuffin, but homemade.

Let's get honest... What's your biggest struggle right now - where do you need help from the group? I'll share mine in the first comment 🫣 Guitar is a Rollercoaster in case you haven't noticed. Up... Down... Up... Down... You're excited to practice, but then you walk by your guitar for the 10th time that day. It can definitely be a love hate relationship 😆 But, there comes is a point in everyone's journey where things get really hard, like "Im never going to be able to do this, hard" For some it's a song, for others it's a solo, even landing those first few chords can make you feel like giving up. But here's a little secret. Its at this pivotal point where everything will change for you. You'll slow down, you'll take a step back, you'll ask for help. You see, most players stop right before they realize, we were never meant to learn in isolation. So I challenge you this week, share the struggle, ask for help, and watch how powerful this community can be.

Sometimes I struggle to focus on incremental improvement and instead catch myself looking too far ahead, worrying that I’ll never become a good guitarist. I try to remind myself that the journey matters — to enjoy the instrument, the feel of it in my hands, and the sounds I can make right now. Even if I never become a “great” guitarist, that doesn’t mean the experience isn’t meaningful or enjoyable. Still, there are moments when that doubt creeps in and it can be discouraging.

I’ve the same problem. When I’m going up the strings from the high e to the low e I don’t have as much of issue but coming down I can’t get one single string to ring out properly. If I go super slow and really angle my fingers I can occasionally get them to ring out, but other than that I can’t. So I just focus on actually getting the fingers to move and using the exercise for kind of dexterity and finger movement more than trying to get good notes.
Here It Is Christmastime
I shared this in my Day 5 of the Kickstart challenge and Jake suggested that it needed a standalone post in the Wins category. It really does feel like a win. I haven’t historically had great confidence in my voice but I have to admit that I am gaining some level of comfort with it and feel that it is something I can improve. When I was young - early elementary school - my music teacher was always pushing me to be in the school choir but then when my voice starting cracking at about age 11 she stopped. I don’t recall any specific negative comments but i certainly wasn’t invited to participate as much or in the same way. Anyway, it’s only been in the last couple of years I’ve stated to be more open to sharing anything and I’m hoping to eventually work up the confidence to maybe play and sing at an open mic. This song is featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special where Kevin Bacon sings it with the band The Old 97s. Hope you enjoy it.

Learning Resources & Practice Tools
There are endless lessons, apps, and methods available today. Which resources have actually helped you improve? Do you prefer video lessons, tabs, ear training, or playing along with backing tracks? What would you like more of inside this community?

Personally, I’ve tried just about all of the common methods — apps, paid subscriptions, books, and countless YouTube videos. When asked what I’ve found most helpful, I can say without hesitation that the video lessons where a song is broken down section by section are, by far and without question, the most impactful training method I’ve ever used. Nothing else compares. Working on well-chosen songs that fit my current ability while still pushing me forward has helped me learn so many things at once. And being able to actually play full songs, after years of mostly just noodling around, has been incredibly encouraging and exciting. I truly believe that what Jake is doing here — teaching through songs in this format — is the right way to learn guitar.
