Weekly Wins
Learning things is cool. That's why we're here. Having an awesome support group along for the ride is just as important. Now that there are some lessons up, I thought it would be cool for anyone who had a win this week to share it. It can be that you got through a handful of lessons, or you had a solid practice with your band. No win is too small! I'll start. My band managed to book shows for every weekend in September. Usually we play over Labor Day, and then we are on break until after Christmas, so I am super stoked to be playing all month. What's your win?

@Paul Rose damn, that's a win! I would have been happy with just the free dinner, but the fact that you got invited back is even better!

@Nick Mercer making time to practice is always a solid win! Especially if the kids are digging it!

Dude, that was killer! I loved your flow and tone!
The video tells all … :(
WOW! It is WEIRD to see video of oneself playing bass. When we record the church livestream, the mix isn’t what is in the house and usually it sounds SOOO bad I don’t go back and listen. Today we had a pro come in and work the sound and EVERYONE was commenting after service about how good the sound was in the house. This was also a hard set for me this week … there was one song with weird syncopation and another that the WL didn’t have time to go over with me ahead of time … so ... I decided to watch it. Besides looking at how my bald spot keeps expanding, my waistline also is expanding … and I came in a few places wrong and the bass in the house didn’t sound like what I thought I was playing … SIGH. It’s damn easy to get frustrated. I know I can’t be a pro after only playing bass for almost two years … and I know that I’m way better than I was when I started … I hate the “stuck” feeling. I think sometime this week I’ll go back and watch the video again and try to be less critical of my “goofs” and make a few notes on what I did “right!” Apologies for the long post! Happy week to all!

Watching yourself play is the BEST feedback. Helped me from a playing perspective as wellas a "stage presence" perspective. I used to be so tense looking and I noticed that when I would watch videos of myself. Now, I'm way more relaxed and everything feels more natural. I gurantee you that no one in the congregation picked up on where you came in wrong, they were probably just enjoying the service/music. Next time you're getting overly critical of yourself, just remember that you're actually up on that stage doing it!
New Members, Introduce Yourselves!
There have been a bunch of new folks that have joined the group recently. Welcome! It's great having a group of like minded musicians to lean on that are also looking to grow their skills. So we can get to know you a little better, throw a post up and introduce yourself. Tell us how you got started, what you like playing, share a pic of your practice space or rig, share some fun facts about yourself!

Amp or No Amp
I’m fairly new to playing live. I think everyone has an image of what playing on stage would/should look like. And I always had an image of a full stack on stage behind me. After playing a few shows and hauling those two 410 cabs up and down my stairs I’m starting to wonder what the pros and cons of having amps on stage are. I have an IEM system so I don’t need an amp for monitoring. Are they good for filling the front of stage sound? Like filling in the gaps between the PA speakers? Posting a couple pictures from recent gigs for visual reference.

I like having the stage sound coming through my amp. I tried playing just through a sansamp into the PA, and I wasn't a big fan of the sound. It just I felt like I had a more full sound playing through a dedicated amp that was designed for the frequencies of the instrument that I am playing.

@Paul Rose I have a fender rumble 200. That thing is insanely loud. It also has a built-in di so I can run it to a PA if necessary. However, for most of the shows that I play, the amp itself is beyond enough.

I've been playing since I was 14 (1994!). I hopped around a bunch of cover bands through high school, but now mostly play for my cats.
