The video tells all … :(
WOW! It is WEIRD to see video of oneself playing bass. When we record the church livestream, the mix isn’t what is in the house and usually it sounds SOOO bad I don’t go back and listen. Today we had a pro come in and work the sound and EVERYONE was commenting after service about how good the sound was in the house. This was also a hard set for me this week … there was one song with weird syncopation and another that the WL didn’t have time to go over with me ahead of time … so ... I decided to watch it. Besides looking at how my bald spot keeps expanding, my waistline also is expanding … and I came in a few places wrong and the bass in the house didn’t sound like what I thought I was playing … SIGH. It’s damn easy to get frustrated. I know I can’t be a pro after only playing bass for almost two years … and I know that I’m way better than I was when I started … I hate the “stuck” feeling. I think sometime this week I’ll go back and watch the video again and try to be less critical of my “goofs” and make a few notes on what I did “right!” Apologies for the long post! Happy week to all!

@Michael Pankow This is a GREAT comment. When I watch guys (esp the blues/rock bassists in Nashville) just play wo/ music and they are just thumping along and their fingers fly over the fretboard … I think … I’m NEVER going to get there. Or, HOW do I get there?

Weekly Wins
Learning things is cool. That's why we're here. Having an awesome support group along for the ride is just as important. Now that there are some lessons up, I thought it would be cool for anyone who had a win this week to share it. It can be that you got through a handful of lessons, or you had a solid practice with your band. No win is too small! I'll start. My band managed to book shows for every weekend in September. Usually we play over Labor Day, and then we are on break until after Christmas, so I am super stoked to be playing all month. What's your win?

My little win as going to play with our new church worship leader this week. We played some of the most recent songs (I wasn’t on the team this past week) and I was really able to follow along and play 90+% of what he wanted … it was a great feeling to feel more comfortable on the fretboard! Gives me HOPE! haha

@Michael Cook thanks. when I started BassBuzz B2B course that was my goal. We have a bassist who plays 2-3 Sundays per month and I’m sort of the understudy. It gives me a “minigoal” about once a month to work on the songs for a week. Sometimes we have drums, sometimes we have keys, it just really depends on scheduling. At first it had my nerves all jangled up, but now I’m getting WAY more comfortable in front of people … non-paying people (haha) but still people! :)

Gosh I love listening to him speak (and play the bass obviosuly)!!! I have been following his “bass camp” thing a while and think it would AMAZING to attend that sometime. Just hanging with bassists and VW for like a week! WOW!!!!!!

Yeah I’d be down for that. I was told recently by a friend who is a professional guitarist that I need to “learn to groove.” NOt 100% sure what that even means. I have the Drum Beats+ app and I often find a random drum rhythm and play scales and make stuff up … but I don’t know exactly what else to do. The “play overs” in the classroom are cool (key of D etc etc) and I like playing along with those as well. But I feel I’m missing something in my practice and hence, in my playing. Cheers!
