a mix of the play-drill-play format, but if player responds well, play segments get progressively harder and more complex, I'll add multiple contraints

What's something you stopped doing as a coach that actually made your athletes better? Sometimes improvement comes from doing less, not more. What's one thing you stopped doing?⬇️

I stopped overly talking and critiquing. This is something I started working on at the beginning of summer and its helped so much. I felt like because I know the practice plan and purpose of drills so well that I always had to 'show' that but often, less talking, more observing helps the players actually figure out the solutions to the problem you give them. Realizing that its not about giving them all the answers , but its about having them work through it and you help them along the way.

Been running a lot for group workouts this summer and thats given me the chance to learn how to get a feel for reading the skill level of the room. I do have practice plans before the workout, but can also go off script. First group workout of the summer had 11 people, and I explained a lot and could feel that the kids weren't as receptive. Been shifting away from that and leaning into more quick explanations and guiding individuals throughout the workout. Trying not to information overload
Season is Approaching!
As we get closer to our athletes' seasons, are there any differences in your training sessions? For us, we are ramping up conditioning a little bit. Lower volume, but more intensity to get ready for game demands. Let me know your thoughts!

more conditioning during workouts, but also the messaging is different. Instead of the during the summer, the season being seen as something so far out, now the messaging is that the season is so close with open gyms starting for HS guys in the next few weeks. Starting to make mental shifts is huge

I honestly like free throws with timed sprints. That has always worked well for me, but as I train more players in the coming months, I'm going to experiment with conditioning throughout the workout and see if that works better for players. I start emphasizing the idea of needing to compete for your spot i open gyms and the mentality they should have going in. Also talk about 'finishing' the offseason and how this is the last stretch of the offseason so dont start taking it easy now just cause summer is over.
