Compression Question
What’s the difference between the “make-up gain” knob and the “output gain” knob on a compressor? Let’s say, for example, I apply compression to a guitar track. After I set the ratio, knee, and release, and then, in this example, let’s say that I’m seeing -5 db of gain reduction, I set my make-up gain to 5+ db. And now, my track is 3db louder than it was before, so I set the output gain to -3 db. Would it be the same thing to just set the make-up gain to 2+ db? In other words, can I, or should I, use the make-up gain to get the track level back to the original dbfs before applying compression? Or, should I be applying the make-up gain to add gain in accordance with the reduction amount using the metering tool on the compression plug-in, and then, look at the dbfs in my DAW, and then apply the output gain accordingly? Can anyone provide me with advice on this? Thanks!

@Andy Laird At least now I understand that Makeup Gain and “output” are affecting the signal in different places, and that Makeup Gain has a purpose that is different from the general output knob. Now, at least, when I’m applying compression and listening for what sounds best, I’ll have an idea of how these different knobs are affecting the sound, because I know where they are in the signal chain within the compressor. Also, they say that no one cares how the sausage is made, except the sausage maker lol

@Andy Laird yes I always level match. This was more about…. Level match with the makeup gain or the output. I’m realizing now that compression plugins with a wet-dry mix control are the ones that have an output knob.
Reference 2
Hey everyone, wanted to thank the team for the awesome material and demos. Worked days 2 and 3 so I am going back through the replays. Is Reference 2 also available for us for free or is it just the limiter?

REFERENCE 2 is one of the few plugins I bought after I learned about GAS. It’s well worth the money and you should be able to get another plugin for free when you buy Reference 2 (at least that was the deal I got when I bought Reference 2).

@Jake Kodweis If you have time, would you be able to share the settings that you use for Reference 2? If you don’t have time before Tuesday, I’ll be on the call on Tuesday and I’ll ask about this on the coaching session then. I’m still catching up on the Fix The Mix Rock Edition replays. Love it!

@Luiza Milenova I was wrong it was the APRIL Fix the Mix , that was the Rock Edition. I don’t think they have done a May version yet.

I just made it through most of DAY 2 from the Fix The Mix Rock Edition (April 2024) and don’t ya know it? @Jake Kodweis shared his settings for Reference 2 here. The line setting is what I was looking for! BINGO!
Native Instruments...
losing my cool with these guys. They make you download an app installer that is buggy and does not let you log in to your account let alone download your products. Then when you go look for a Support email THEY DON'T HAVE ONE. Yeah, they have the support page that answers absolutely no relevant questions but on top of that, if you go to message them on Instagram about an issue or on a post they flag you for spam. I almost lost my Instagram account because they flagged my question rather than answering it. And if you go to their IG you'll find countless people asking for support to the point some comments are turned off or there are post with no comments bc they're monitoring them. This is ridiculous.. I'm tempted to spam their Twitter bc free speech S/O Elon. Has anyone else had issues with accessing/ logging into your accounts/products lately?

I bought MASCHINE 2 and Komplete Ultimate 12 (for 50% off on a sale) but it was in a GAS moment before I joined MOAM's Hybrid Musician program. I've told this story before, but my thought was, "oh, if I have a bunch of plugins and an easy to use software / hardware combo (Maschine) then I'll be able to create great sounding music." Boy, was I WRONG! That's what led me to MOAM's Hybrid Musician program and down the path of understanding mixing and mastering. I do love having all of their plugins, but having them all was more overwhelming than anything else. Having all the sounds and tools but not knowing what to do with them was useless. As time has gone on, I've also been frustrated with their support, and I've often wondered if that money would have been better spent on other plugins. I won't bash Native Instruments products, but their support... meh.

@Berlin RedluX Native Instruments was purchased by a private investment firm in January 2021 — that’s when their support really went downhill in my opinion.
