Become a Community Councillor for North Berwick
https://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/info/210600/elections_and_voting/11921/community_council_election Here’s a real tangible way you can make a difference to the town- put yourself forward to be elected as a community councillor! Community Councils are run on a voluntary basis by local people. They act as a vital link between East Lothian Council and the local area and give residents an opportunity to speak out on local issues of concern. The elections for the next 4 year term are just around the corner- here’s the details: Community council elections will take place on Thursday 9 October 2025. Key dates Publication of Notice of Election Monday 1 September Issue of Nomination Papers Monday 1 September Last day for lodging Nomination Papers Thursday 18 September 4 pm Last day for withdrawal of Nomination Papers Thursday 25 September 4 pm Publication of Notice of Poll Thursday 25 September 5 pm Polling Day Thursday 9 October - 12 noon - 7 pm Count Friday 10 October - 10 am What does it involve? A public meeting once a month on a Tuesday evening 7.30-9pm ish A mid-month shorter zoom business meeting Each councillor then takes on additional roles- the usual chair/ vice chair/ secretary, and then representing the comm. council in all the various groups across the town- things like the area partnership, coastal communities, on the move group, the high school PTA, the health and wellbeing group etc. NBCC organise town events like the Calder cup, the remembrance parade, the Christmas lights, picnic in the park. There is a statutory duty to review planning applications for the town, for example, we recently objected on behalf of the town for the demolishment of the golf hotel building. We organised the local place plan and objected to the parking changes. NBCC also sit on various trusts - the Stella Moffat trust and Russel Bequest and link closely with the elected councillors for the ward.

@Nick McCashin sure just give me a shout!
What should happen to the Community Centre?
Let's chat about some ideas for the Community centre How can we make it more inviting? How can we revive it into a place for everyone? What happens if we do nothing with it? Should we just do nothing and let the East Lothian Council sell it? How could it make money if the community takes it over as an asset transfer?

Herbspace could really use a space for their community garden which they lost when the Abbey was sold. Unfortunately I suspect ELC will push forward with a quick sale much in the same way they went about closing and selling the abbey. The community centre would be ideal for a number of things if only they had the same janitor cover that they used to. When Kenny worked there he used to do late nights and weekends, but it’s now closed on a Sunday and early on Friday and Saturday nights. It would be a much better venue for the ‘live at the law’ events as there is disabled access and parking unlike the scout hall that they currently use. I used to run gymnastics classes there pre-Covid but unfortunately it didn’t open up fully after Covid because they were still using it for coordinating the resilience work/ foodbank. Our coaches had to move on for other work and we had to move and sell the equipment stored there- it was such a shame as it was a great wee venue for beginners gymnastics, we currently don’t have any gymnastics facilities in the town- the nearest is west barns or Haddington

I used to be. The sporty was an amazing facility when the crèche was available in the mornings and when I was on maternity leave with my eldest, I was able to go 5 days a week. It got closed (along with all the others across EL) with no warning making the staff out of jobs citing ‘lack of use’ The NB one was certainly almost always full and really difficult to nab a space it was that popular. It was really worthwhile having a monthly membership then. But now, because I don’t have childcare it’s just not worth it. Marine doesn’t offer good enough classes or have decent enough gym equipment. Whitekirk hill similar and VERY expensive/ no trials allowed Been on the waiting list for diamonds in Fenton barns for a loooooong time!

Travel 🙄🙄🙄 It’s not really set up well for any kind of travelling around. Not enough frequent buses or decent route coverage of all the new estates Absolutely dire cycling options especially with kids- no linked paths, no really decent safe routes to school, not enough bike racks And parking- OMG parking is a nightmare! If there isn’t the public and active transport infrastructure, people are going to need to drive, and parking is always incredibly difficult. I always worry about people who are elderly or ill trying to get to the GP surgery or the pharmacies. I really hope the independent town bus plans comes to fruition

@Nick McCashin nursery in particular- in the old building there was parking but there’s absolutely nothing nearby now. I’m all for active travel but it’s not always practical- i live out past Tesco and have wee ones that can’t walk that distance yet or cycle/ scoot so if I was to do both school runs walking it would mean a 2 hour daily commute which is INSANE just to get to school and for a baby to be stuck in a buggy for. Practically speaking it’s just not always possible to park and stride etc, people have busy lives and are often juggling the work commute with school drop offs or other children- safe parking is essential

Hi all, I’m Mairi. The one with eleventy seven kids. (Well, 4.5…) I moved here 15 years ago just before I had my eldest (now in 4th year at the high school) I also have my stepson in 3rd year, a P2, a nearly 4 yr old in nursery and a soon to be 2 year old. I’m a paediatric physio but also a gymnastics coach/ judge. I used to run the classes here with Elevate before Covid. During Covid I randomly ended up partially running the resilience team with my partner Ally and a bunch of other unsuspecting recruits who all had no idea what we were getting ourselves involved with. From that, I then ended up as a community councillor by default, sat on the area partnership and chaired the Xmas lights committee and brought in the new Xmas parade/ switch on event (still a work in progress!) and bagged some funding from NB trust for the town sound system. Sadly it’s becoming virtually impossible to make meetings work with 5 kids and chauffeuring and working and I’m going to be stepping down from those roles, but still want to be very much involved in the community. There’s still a real lack of joined up working across the various groups…despite the local place plan, still so many decisions are made without consultation, particularly by ELC and it’s very frustrating!

@Michael Cooper yeah I was gutted when space got shut down. It had a fab wee soft play attached to the cafe, a couple of recording studios, the cafe had a wee room off it for events like Halloween disco and youth club bits, not to mention the skate park itself being so well used. It was such a loss :(
