Become a Community Councillor for North Berwick
Here’s a real tangible way you can make a difference to the town- put yourself forward to be elected as a community councillor!
Community Councils are run on a voluntary basis by local people. They act as a vital link between East Lothian Council and the local area and give residents an opportunity to speak out on local issues of concern.
The elections for the next 4 year term are just around the corner- here’s the details:
Community council elections will take place on Thursday 9 October 2025.
Key dates
Publication of Notice of Election Monday 1 September
Issue of Nomination Papers Monday 1 September
Last day for lodging Nomination Papers Thursday 18 September 4 pm
Last day for withdrawal of Nomination Papers Thursday 25 September 4 pm
Publication of Notice of Poll Thursday 25 September 5 pm
Polling Day Thursday 9 October - 12 noon - 7 pm
Count Friday 10 October - 10 am
What does it involve?
A public meeting once a month on a Tuesday evening 7.30-9pm ish
A mid-month shorter zoom business meeting
Each councillor then takes on additional roles- the usual chair/ vice chair/ secretary, and then representing the comm. council in all the various groups across the town- things like the area partnership, coastal communities, on the move group, the high school PTA, the health and wellbeing group etc. NBCC organise town events like the Calder cup, the remembrance parade, the Christmas lights, picnic in the park.
There is a statutory duty to review planning applications for the town, for example, we recently objected on behalf of the town for the demolishment of the golf hotel building.
We organised the local place plan and objected to the parking changes.
NBCC also sit on various trusts - the Stella Moffat trust and Russel Bequest and link closely with the elected councillors for the ward.
Feel free to ask questions, unfortunately I’m having to step down as I just don’t have the time required to dedicate to it, but hopefully once my kids are a wee bit bigger I can rejoin
