2025.01.03: WOW (Workout of the Week)
I had a fantastic Dragon Boat Clinic in Alameda this past weekend. Then also a great Tek Talk about pacing on the paddle erg on Sunday. Join us for the next Tek Talk on Wednesday at 5:30pm PST. Sorry for all the time shifts. I'll be traveling to San Diego over the weekend for the HanoHano Ocean Challenge. I wanted to give my thanks to all of you who are sharing, posting, and engaging with the paddling community in here. I encourage you to post as you train, take a selfie and post it onto the Skool so we can keep motivating/inspiring each other to train. Here is 2025.01.03 WOW (HARD!) 10' WU 10' at 80% 3X[4(:30 at 80%, :20 at 90%, :10 at 100%), 6' at 60%] 10' CD When setting up this workout, you can set it as 4 minutes of work. Know that for 30 seconds, you will go at 80%. Then for 20 seconds, you will go at 90%. Then for 10 seconds, you will go at 100%. You will repeat that for 4 times for a total of 4 minutes. Then you'll light paddle at 60% for 6 minutes before going into the sprint sequence again. Feel free to ask questions below if I'm still not clear enough. Top 30-day contributors will be winning prizes or $$$. 1st - 1:1 on-water session with me ($200 value) 2nd - 1 week of Personalized Training Program ($90 value) 3rd - 1 gift of a month to a friend for to join TLC Skool Community ($50 value) Note: must be redeemed within the following month. What did Tek do this past week?: This week was a mix of intense and steady state paddling. I'm getting close to the final week of prep for the Hanohano race! What will Tek do this upcoming week?: I have a few more workouts left to tune up my paddling before San Diego Hanohano race on 1/25. I'm driving down after work on Friday night and then racing Saturday morning. 20(2/1) Kilohana Spec OC6 practice
- Keep hull speed high so that getting on waves will be more effortless. - When attacking, still need to be deep at the catch first - If you're in seat 1, you gotta keep the body looking aggressive to model it for everyone behind you I was in a spec oc6 with Ethan, Tek, Nick, Makena, Taishi, Ron. The workout was intervals. 20 sets of 2 mins on and 1 min active. Inside the channel, it was windy but no conditions. Outside the channel, it was bumpy! There were a few waves going upwind where we dropped down and water rushed over the front. All 5 OC6s did great. On the upwind, we focused on deep long strokes which helped to carry speed. We called a few "shorts" to burst forward. Unfortunately when we did it the first time, our shorts ended up with slapping the water so it worked against our objective. The next time, we focused on deep short stroke and grabbing first. That made a big difference. On the downwind portion, it was important that we gained higher hull speed first to get onto waves. Then we had a few where we pushed late which caused us to fight upwards onto the wave, tiring ourselves out and resulting in missing the wave still. On the next few pieces, we adjusted to having higher hull speed first, and then calling the pushes slightly earlier to allow us to slide onto the next waves more effortlessly. What questions do you have about upwind/downwind conditions?

For me leaning forward on my surfski after catching a wave helped a lot for riding the waves ( thanks Veni for the suggestion). Improved the distance travelled per wave caught and helps keep speed up to catch the next one. I haven’t done much oc1 in the bay, but definitely can see how keeping hull speed up on oc6 can help catch the waves easier.
