#Brandenberg2025. Day 0 - Thursday, 7/10/2025
Eri and I got 30 minutes of sleep between 2:00am and 2:30am after frantically packing for 5+ hours after the kids went to bed. We kept asking ourselves, "What are we doing?" But this is also about showing our kids what it means to chase your dreams, and it's often kinda messy. Pure chaos trying to pack for 11 days of racing equipment and items and then also for the two kids. Toughest was probably thinking through what our needs are for our 1yo Tatsu... bottle parts, carriers, food pouches, etc. Traveling with 2 kids, it's a lot. For Ravenna Club Crew, we traveled with just Tatsu. For Japan, we traveled with all 3 but it wasn't race related. Our 5 hour flight from San Francisco to Newark departed at 6am. We arrived at 4am to leave us ample time to get to the gate. Our next flight was an 8 hour flight from Newark to Berlin. It was nice to see many of our Team USA teammates also on this flight. This flight was quite eventful because at this point, both Haru and Tatsu are overtired. They were whining and overreacting to the smallest things. Tatsu didn't want to stay put. Haru wanted to watch TV, but only on mommy's seat and with mommy's headphones. Nothing could've prepared us for the projectile vomit from Tatsu. One second Tatsu's happily eating a chicken nugget, the next second, Eri used her hands to cover the vomit as I struggled to grab the wipes from the diaper bag under the seat in front of Eri. Another incident... Haru had decided she MUST fill up her water bottle with the bottle of water that the flight attendants handed out. After doing so, she ended up not closing her bottle tightly and it spilled over her entire seat. This was day zero... boy I hope we survive this trip HAHA! Many people have already told us this, that we are absolutely insane to do this. They're probably right, we are pretty crazy. I wouldn't want to do this with anyone else. Racing with Eri means showing our kids what partnership looks like. I'm glad we were able to get help my parents, sister, and brother to help watch Ryu back in San Francisco. I'm also grateful for the Team USA teammates and supporters ready to help us out as well.
