Why So Many People Are Sick, Tired, Inflamed, and Stuck And Why the Nervous System Is the Missing Piece
For years, I did everything “right.” I optimized my nutrition.I trained hard.I biohacked.I tried to out-supplement, out-discipline, and out-think my symptoms. And still, I dealt with autoimmune patterns, chronic fatigue, pain, brain fog, and cycles where my body felt like it was working against me. What I didn’t understand then, but see clearly now, is this: Most chronic illness is not the body malfunctioning. It is the nervous system protecting. The Nervous System Is the Master Regulator Your nervous system controls: immune signaling inflammation digestion hormones sleep pain perception energy production healing and repair When the nervous system perceives safety, the body moves into repair, digestion, immune balance, and regeneration. When the nervous system perceives threat, even unconsciously, the body shifts into survival. That survival state is brilliant short term. It is devastating long term. Your autonomic nervous system has two primary modes: 1. Sympathetic Mode Fight or flightMobilizationInflammation increases Digestion slowsImmune system becomes aggressiveEnergy is borrowed, not created 2. Parasympathetic Mode Rest and repairDigestion improvesInflammation lowersImmune system regulatesCells repair and regenerate There is also a shutdown or freeze response that can happen after prolonged stress or overwhelm, where energy drops, fatigue increases, and the body feels heavy or numb. Many people with chronic illness are not stuck in one state.They are cycling between overdrive and collapse. When that answer keeps coming back as “no” over months or years, the body adapts by staying alert, guarded, and defensive. There are moments on the healing path when something clicks and you realize the issue was never about doing more. It was about removing what was quietly taking from you. Recently, I have been moving through one of the most challenging health chapters I have faced in years. And I do not say that lightly. Many of you know my journey. I have spent decades in breathwork, nervous system regulation, detoxification, biohacking, and consciousness work. I thought I knew my body well. Then about six months ago, after a 10-day darkness retreat, everything changed. Inside that darkroom, visible black mold was later discovered. At the time, I did not think much of it. But from that moment on, my system never fully returned to baseline. I experienced deep nervous system dysregulation. Workouts would make me sick instead of stronger. Sleep became fragmented. Ice baths and sauna, tools that once regulated me, suddenly crashed me for days. Recovery that used to take hours took two or three days. My body was no longer responding the way it used to. This was not weakness. This was information. The Terrain Matters More Than the Symptom Modern medicine is very good at naming diseases. It is far less skilled at asking why the terrain became vulnerable in the first place. Mold exposure, chronic stress, environmental toxins, poor sleep, emotional overload, and unresolved trauma all shift the internal environment. When the nervous system is stuck in survival, digestion weakens. Detox pathways slow. Immune signaling becomes chaotic. In that terrain, opportunistic organisms thrive. Parasites are not just something you get from poor hygiene or travel. They are ancient organisms that coexist with humans and tend to flourish when the internal ecosystem is compromised. Think of your body less like a fortress and more like a garden. When the soil is healthy, nothing invasive takes over. When the soil is depleted, something else moves in. For years I forced myself into dietary frameworks I believed were “optimal.” On the outside, it looked disciplined. Clean. Impressive. On the inside, my system slowly shut down. When I started eating for energy, not ideology, my body responded fast. And over time, I stopped needing a “diet” at all. Food stops being a source of nourishment and becomes a source of stress. At its core, nutrition has one primary role:to support energy production, regulation, and resilience. When food supports energy, the nervous system softens. Digestion improves. Hormones stabilize. And to find that, we must move away from belief systems…and back into relationship with the body.

Love this perspective. As a former chef, I’ve seen firsthand that there’s definitely no “perfect” diet, people can eat the same meal and have totally different experiences with it. Learning to pay attention to how food actually makes you feel is huge. That said, I’ve also learned that a little science and structure go a long way. For me it’s less about following a philosophy and more about finding that balance between nourishment, enjoyment, and what genuinely supports your energy day to day 🙂
