Hive mind input on my one-line pitch please!
Am starting the process of sending queries to agents and wondered if you guys could comment on some pitch ideas: A strong-willed, self-reliant old woman struggles against the weakening of her powers as she gradually loses her memory. Judy, a furiously independent old woman, battles the loss of identity and control of her deteriorating memory. (feels like there might be some grammar issue here!) The novel follows Judy, an independent, aging widow, from the early, mysterious signs of memory loss to her death. Something like that - my, I find this stuff difficult! All ideas gratefully accepted. And huge thanks in advance.

I agree with Jonathan. Of them all, I like the second best, but they're all missing what the dementia is specifically preventing Judy from doing (her goal) and what will happen if she doesn't achieve it (stakes). I'm sure the novel has Judy doing more than just sitting around forgetting things. Try to give a sense of what that is.

No problem at all!

Congratulations to all those who entered the prize. We had over 533 entries, which is significantly more than last year (which was our first). Judging & feedback will proceed in line with the schedule on our website.

Anyone wishing they'd paid for feedback just so they could get a bit of an indicator sooner rather than later... or is that just me 😅

@Petra Glover yes, feedback is so useful. I’ve got a few writing buddies who are happy to swap manuscripts, so I tend to go down that route.
Competition Results
Hi, can anyone clarify the dates on the site? Are the results today and then feedback by April or? Thank you x

@Gabby Martini I assumed this too! I've had feedback first in other competitions and then the longlist, shortlist and winners announced later.
Interiority question
Guys, when you write interiority (thoughts in italics), if the character’s thought is a rhetorical question do you remove the question mark? Or keep it? Thanks 🙏

My go-to advice for pretty much anything writing related is alway Emma Darwin. Her blog is priceless. Read all about psychic distance / narrative distance. It'll answer all your questions and more! http://emmadarwin.substack.com/p/psychic-distance-what-it-is-and-how

Getting it Done
What’s the one thing stopping you from finishing your current WIP right now? Procrastination? Perfectionism? That endless research rabbit hole? We are have something - share yours below.

I've had a very long to-do list to work through since Christmas, and it's been really hard not to procrastinate doing that. My writing has been bleeding into my thoughts around the edges, begging to get done, but I know when I try to write when I should be doing other things, I can't focus properly. I'm finally at a point where I can start writing again, but now every time I hit even a little wall, I find myself picking up my phone... It takes time before I can fully get into the zone, where everything flows!

@Juno Baker yes! I do love writing. When I'm doing other writing-related jobs, it feeds my brain in other ways, but there's nothing quite like fresh words on a blank page :)
